STAFORD RANGERS V MATLOCK TOWN – MATCH REPORT

Stafford Rangers 2 Matlock Town 0

Evo-Stik Northern Premier League

Saturday 27 January 2018

Rangers secured their first win of 2018 with a comfortable 2-0 score against Matlock, a result that sees the two sides exchange places in the table.

After a bright opening that saw both Josh Craddock and Tyrell Waite shoot wide for Rangers inside the opening two minutes, play deteriorated into a scrappy long ball game with neither side taking control.

That changed on 15 mins when Stafford made the breakthrough. A long free kick from Kieren Westwood was headed down by Kieran Morris and finished off by Karl Hawley with a shot under the body of Matlock keeper Phil Barnes.

Boro loanee Waite, who had scored for Matlock when the two clubs met earlier in the season, came close to scoring against his former side but somehow managed to turn the ball wide of an inviting goal after good work on the left from Osebi Abadaki.

Hawley doubled his account four minutes into the second half.

Abadaki broke on the left and found support in Josh Craddock who lifted the ball into the area. Hawley was under pressure from Matlock defender Dwayne Wiley but managed to send the ball trickling past Barnes.

Abadaki went wide with a couple of efforts from just outside the area but a double substitution for Matlock gave the visitors a boost and Shaun Harrad forced Adam Whitehouse into his first save of the afternoon.

Jan Yeomans then struck a half volley wide and Harrad turned another chance wide at the near post.

But Stafford held firm and Hawley missed a couple of chances to complete his hat trick firstly when shooting straight at Barnes then Kieren Westwood’s forceful cross ballooned up off his head and over.

Sloppy defending from the Boro gave Matlock a chance of a late consolation but Harrad fired across the face of goal then Michael Williams’ touch saw the ball run away from him as he broke into the area and Rangers were able to celebrate a clean as well as the three points.

Matlock Town

This Saturday, 27th January, we entertain Matlock Town in a Northern Premier League fixture. The league table shows the clubs separated by just one place and 2 points, so it becomes the typical 6 pointer, with a win taking Rangers above Matlock. However, Matlock will no doubt be up for this fixture as they try to go for the double, having beaten us 2-0 last October at The Autoworld Arena, and they are fresh from a very good away win at 6th placed Farsley Celtic last Tuesday night. Makes for a very good encounter so come on down to Marston Road for the 3pm kick off. Match sponsors for the day are our very good friends from Abbey Polymers, who also sponsor the teams’ away shirts.

Next Tuesday night 30th January we travel to Rocester as we try to progress further in the Staffs Senior Cup. Rocester may sit bottom of the Total Motion Midland Football league, but they do have games in hand to escape relegation, and as a local derby, I am sure they will be up for this game, so your support at Hillfield Rocester will be appreciated for this 7:45 kick off.

Fixture Amendment

Tues 30th January Integro Cup V Coalville has been postponed.

Now Rocester V Stafford Rangers in the Staffs Senior Cup will take place at Rocester 7.45pm K.O

COALVILLE TOWN V STAFFORD RANGERS – Match Report

Coalville Town  0  Stafford Rangers  0

Evo-Stik League Premier Division

Tuesday 23 January 2018

Neil Kitching’s 200th game in charge of Rangers ended in a goal-less stalemate at Coalville but it could and should have been a different story as his goal shy side were in evidence once more.

But it wasn’t for the want of trying as Rangers created numerous chances – they just couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net.

Coalville was the venue of Kitch’s best moment at the club when they won the Division One South title there in 2016 but, nearly two years on, it was a soulless place with just 118 fans in attendance on a cold blustery evening.

Rangers were in control from the start, looking the most dangerous against a suspect home defence but they had to wait until the 15th minute before they got a real look in as Karl Hawley latched onto a long ball but when he went down under the challenge of home keeper Matt Coton, the referee only awarded a goal kick.

Coton again saved Coalville when Hawley and Robert Thompson-Brown combined in another threatening break while Ravens’ defender Lee Torr was lucky to escape when he sliced his clearance on to the roof of his own net.

Boro newcomer Tyrell Waite fired wide from the edge of the area while Jack Sherratt had a shot blocked.

Coalville’s threat was sporadic and half hearted with Adam Whitehouse not having a save to make.

The second half painted a similar picture.

In the first minute, Kieren Westwood tried a long range effort which didn’t trouble Coton then Waite fired over from around 25 yards after creating himself some space.

Coton saved from Jack Sherratt after another error from Torr before Kieran Morris headed wide from Osebi Abadaki’s centre. He should have scored.

A poor clearance from Coton presented Rangers with another opportunity but the Coalville keeper redeemed himself with an excellent save to push away Josh Craddock’s drive that was heading for the top corner. Two minutes later, Hawley turned the ball wide at the near post.

Despite Rangers’ domination, there was always a danger that Coalville could nick it and they sensed this as they stepped up their game in the last 15 minutes.

Danny Jenno was unable to finish after Alex Howes’ free kick into the Rangers area then Dan Creaney raced clear but his failure to shoot first time gave Morris the chance to get back and clear the danger.

In the dying minutes Howes almost snatched a winner while Steve Towers’ cross flashed across the face of goal but a point was about as much as Coalville deserved.

Coalville: 1 Matt Coton, 2 Cleveland Taylor, 3 Kyle Bryant, 4 Danny Jenno, 5 Lee Torr, 6 Steve Towers, 7 Tom McGlinchey (12 Kyle Dixon 62m), 8 Jermaine Hollis, 9 Dan Creaney, 10 Nat Watson (17 Anthony Carney 72m), 11Alex Howes. Unused Subs 13 Jamie Hannis, 14 Dean Freeman, 15 James Carvell
