Gainsborough Trinity 1 Stafford Rangers 1

Evo-Stik Northern Premier League

Saturday 26 January 2019

Stafford Rangers produced one of their best performances of the season to pick up a point at play off chasing Gainsborough Trinity.

And they had to do it without captain Luke Jones and Jack Sherratt (both injured) and the suspended duo of Joe Cuff and Andy Haworth.

In came Sam Coulson who was back available after being unavailable for last week’s victory at Grantham and Jed Davies who joined the club on Friday from local rivals Hednesford Town. There was a first start in 10 games for Lewis Banks who played in an unfamiliar attacking left midfield role.

There was also the return of another familiar face as Josh Craddock took a place on the subs bench having also made the move from Hednesford 24 hours earlier.

Gainsborough came close to an opener with their first attack inside three minutes. A long ball from Joe Maguire was knocked down by Ashley Worsfold to Alex Byrne and Stafford keeper Adam Siviter was forced to tip a 25 yarder over for a corner.

Max Watters had a great chance for the home side midway through the half when he found himself clear on goal but Siviter prevented almost certain goal, saving well with his legs.

Jake Charles missed an equally good chance for Stafford a couple of minutes later when he failed to connect with an inch perfect cross from Theo Bailey-Jones.

A slip from Davies saw another chance go begging then Charles missed out again when he hit the post from just inside the area after Bailey-Jones had won the ball from Siviter’s long clearance.

Stafford were made to pay for their missed chances five minutes before half time when a Stafford free kick broke down and Byrne sent a long ball crossfield to Will Longbottom. The Gainsborough wide man picked out Worsfold who headed in from close range.

But Stafford got back level on the stroke of half time thanks to a Josh Green penalty after Neil Austin had tripped Lewis Banks following Tom Thorley’s pass.

There weren’t too many clear chances at either end in the first 30 minutes of the second period – a spell largely dominated by Stafford.

Gainsborough’s best came from Alex Byrne’s free kick that landed on the roof of the Stafford net while, at the other end, Charles was denied by Jon Stewart in the home goal.

But the best chance to win it fell to Worsfold when Simon Russell flicked on Max Watters’ cross but the unmarked forward blazed over.

Barrow 2 – 1 Stafford Rangers Match Report -Paul Blanchette

Beaumont Parks Luxury accommodation greeted players and supporters as Barrow U18’s hosted Rangers U18’s.
The large 4G surface provided for a fiercely competitive game and some fine technical football.

The referees whistle triggered 90 minutes of pure white-knuckle thrills as both teams launched from the blocks.

On 2 minutes tenacious Rangers 9 Lucas Burnett chased a back pass giving Barrows keeper no time to think. Burnett nipped in to steal the ball which spun free to Max Dixon closing on the right. Dixon’s subsequent shot flew wide, the scene was set. Barrow pressed high and tight moving the ball with vigour, a tenth minute Barrow corner found an untracked runner and Barrow headed in to make it 1-0.

The action raged as Rangers fought valiantly to stifle Barrows pace and movement. Rangers midfield pair Josh Moody and Sam Jarvis worked tirelessly. With 16 minutes gone Barrow were awarded a contentious free kick after the referee judged Rangers centre half centurion Connor Taylor had pulled the Barrow players shirt. The free kick was whipped in forcing a fine save from keeper Craig Pain, who scooped the resulting corner from the air.

Rangers right back Adam Taylor and left back Tim Khayat were kept very busy matching Barrow’s tricky wide men for pace and power.
On 25 minutes a clever through ball from Connor Taylor found Max Dixon in space. Dixon ran at the Barrow goal but was caught by a fine last gasp tackle by the defender to clear the danger. A few minutes later Rangers no: 7 Christian Blanchette was caught with a high tackle as he broke through central midfield. The resulting free kick was cleared by the Barrow defence. The frantic action continued with Barrows no: 7 firing wide after picking up a loose ball. A few minutes later Barrows impressive no: 7 broke through with only keeper Craig Pain to beat 7’s shot was saved brilliantly by Pain to ease the pressure.

Another Barrow break saw Rangers central enforcer James Black slide in with a brilliantly timed challenge. The referee consulted the linesman who confirmed no foul. With half time fast approaching a slick piece of interplay between 8 Sam Jarvis and 3 Tim Khayat saw Jarvis thread an inch perfect ball to Christian Blanchette advancing at pace on the left wing. Despite close attention from Barrows no: 10 Blanchette’s focus held strong as he cut into the Barrow penalty area and slotted coolly past the giant Barrow keeper to pull the scores level at 1-1. “You are always most vulnerable just after you score” A minute later Barrow’s talented No; 7 picked up the ball and ran at the Rangers goal. Powerful Tim Khayat raced to catch him tracking the No; 7 on the edge of the Rangers penalty area. No: 7 tripped right and left unleashing a shot which took a cruel deflection off a Rangers defender leaving keeper Pain stranded. 2-1 Barrow.

Half time 2-1

A welcome break at half time saw Rangers return stronger. Rangers pushed hard closing the Barrow players with much more urgency. Owen Turner entered the action proving a very capable replacement at centre back, with James Black taking a well-earned break.
Another dubious refereeing decision handed a free kick to Barrow against a bemused Adam Taylor with the resultant free kick being struck over the bar.

On 58 minutes flying full back Tim Khayat powered down the left floating a shot over the Barrow keeper which dropped a foot wide of the post. A minute later Sam Jarvis launched a powerful shot goalward which was brilliantly saved by the Barrow keeper. Just over the hour mark Barrow broke going one on one with Replacement keeper Charlie Baker who raced out to narrow the angle forcing the Barrow shot wide. Khayat now suffering from cramp was replaced by Alex Smith who took up position on the right side of midfield with the classy Connor Baikie slotting in to left back.

Rangers pressed for the equaliser, Barrow were rocking, the immaculate first half discipline starting to crack. Rangers pushed forward with wave after wave of attacks but still Barrow held firm. With 10 minutes to go Barrow’s No:11 stamped on the rear of Rangers Adam Taylor leg following a verbal exchange, earning the Barrow player a straight red card.

Again, Rangers pushed forward with Christian Blanchette firing over. 90 + 5 saw Rangers Josh Stack wriggle through the Barrow back line and race at the Barrow keeper, stack passed right to the advancing Alex Smith whose fierce shot was saved by Barrow’s keeper.
The final whistle saw an elated Barrow side throw their arms aloft. A more competitive game of football would be difficult to find, in the end a deflected goal separated the teams.

Final score Barrow 2-1 Stafford Rangers.

Grantham 0-5 Stafford Rangers

Evo-Stik Northern Premier League

Saturday 19 January 2019

Five goals – all headers – saw Stafford Rangers record their biggest away win for more than four years as Grantham Town were put to the sword. The only dampener on the afternoon was the sending off of midfielder Andy Haworth for two acts of indiscipline within a five-minute spell early in the second half. Grantham made a bright start and got the ball in the Stafford net inside two minutes when Chris Salt headed in a free kick from Ross Barrows, but a tight offside call went in Stafford’s favour. But Rangers soon stamped their authority on the game and took the lead on 10 mins. A series of three consecutive corners from Haworth culminated with Luke Jones powering home from around 12 yards – the ball going in via the underside of the bar.

Ten minutes later it was 2-0. The Bailey-Jones beat Oliver Luto with ease down the right and delivered a cross for Tom Thorley. Again, the ball truck the underside of the Grantham bar but the assistant indicated that the ball had crossed the line.

Having lost a 2-0 lead more than once this season, Rangers were desperate for a third and it came on 29 minutes from Bailey-Jones with a back-post header following a left wing cross from Matt Hill. The Grantham defence was unmoved. Grantham did offer a little more in the latter stages of the half but, apart from one half chance that saw the ball bounce goal wards off Charlie Ward, Adam Siviter wasn’t called upon.

Haworth’s moment of madness saw him see red on 55 minutes. Having been cautioned for dribbling the ball away from a Grantham free kick, he needlessly clashed with Barrows off the ball and saw red. Sensing a gateway back into the game, Grantham created their best chance of the afternoon soon after with a good header from Ward following Barrows’ free kick but Siviter made a fine save to his right.

But any Stafford nerves were eased on 65 mins when Lewis Banks – on as a sub for Peter Williams – headed in Josh Green’s free kick. Five minutes later, it was five as Jack Sherratt delivered the ball to the back post from just inside the area and Dan Burns headed home. Hill went close to adding a sixth with a powerful drive from 30 yards that Jordan Wright spilled but the Grantham keeper recovered before any Rangers player could take advantage.
