Stafford Rangers’ six match unbeaten run in the league came to an end with a disappointing display at Basford United. Defender Dan Burns made a surprise return to the starting line-up, but Luke Jones was still absent along with Sam Coulson who picked up a hamstring injury in the midweek win at Stalybridge while Andy Haworth was also out through injury. Basford were first to show when Kane Richards held off Jack Sherratt to advance to the edge of the area, but his shot didn’t match the run as he scooped the ball over the top.
Rangers were denied what looked a clear penalty when Brad Gascoigne pulled back Evan Garnett and then, to add insult to injury, Basford went down to the other end and took a 6th minute lead as Richards converted Liam Hearn’s square ball from close range. But Rangers struck back in fine style and, just three minutes later, Brad Grayson made it three goals in three games when he fired home from around 20 yards out with a first time shot following a pass from Joe Berks. After an explosive start, matters calmed down with little action of note until a Jack Sherratt header appeared to strike a Basford hand but, once again, the referee wasn’t interested in penalty appeals from the Stafford camp. A superb ball from Grayson found Garnett who did well to create the chance, but Basford keeper Kieran Preston made an excellent save, turning the ball over for a corner. The home defence looked uncertain under pressure, but the home side restored their lead on 39 mins when James Reid’s well struck shot from the inside left channel beat Lewis King’s dive. Liam Bateman could have added a third just before the half time whistle after a good exchange with Nat Watson but fired over. Hearn fired straight at King after a pass from Josh Green fell short then King denied Richards with his fingertips as the Basford man raced through the Stafford defence. Rangers were still in the contest. Josh Green was unlucky to see his 20-yarder come back off the post then Garnett’s shot, from even further out, was deflected over before Jed Davies’ attempt to float the ball over Kieran Preston was claimed by the former Basford keeper. But that was about it from Stafford and Basford controlled the last 15 minutes as Stafford ran out of steam. Richards missed another good chance while King forced Hearn wide, but it was Hearn who made the game safe for Basford on 83 mins when he diverted Nat Watson’s left-wing centre past King.
