Stafford Rangers look doomed to relegation after suffering their heaviest defeat of the season away to fellow strugglers Buxton. It was a heartless display from the Boro who seemed to be resigned to their fate as they made it four consecutive defeats. In a difficult season, Rangers have suffered some misfortune with injury and individual errors costing them points but rarely have they been outplayed for the full 90 minutes but the last two games against Morpeth and Buxton have seen a side lacking in confidence and self-belief. Injury and suspension left Rangers down to the bare bones for the trip to Derbyshire prompting the return of veteran Levi Reid who started in the right back position vacated by the suspended Josh Burns. The heart of defence paired together Sam Coulson and Paul Bignot with Matt Hill continuing on the left.
Brad Grayson was a controversial inclusion against his former club with Brandon Diau dropping to the bench. Rangers suffered a further set back when Joe Cuff hobbled off in the 14th minute after a timely tackle from Matt Curley had denied him a shot on goal. But Buxton had already shown their intent with a catalogue of missed chances - Diego De Girolamo and Reece King guilty from the best of them. Buxton took the lead on 24 minutes following a corner on the right. Lewis King saved well turning Reece King’s header on to the bar. Nico De Girolamo’s follow up was blocked on the line, but Callum Chipperfield found a way through to put his side ahead. Diego De Girolamo made it 2-0 five minutes later as latched on to Reece King’s ball over the top and went around the Stafford keeper after out pacing Bignot. Diego De Girolamo was denied by King a minute later and only Matt Hill’s intervention prevented Connor O’Grady from getting on the scoresheet when a goal looked a formality. But Rangers got themselves back in to it seven minutes after the break when Levi Reid’s throw found Grayson on the right. Buxton failed to cut out his low cross and Hill arrived at the back post to give his side an unlikely lifeline. Tom Thorley fired over from 12 yards out and Brandon Diau was unable to get a clear shot in after receiving a ball from Jake Charles. But, a minute after Diau’s missed opportunity, Buxton had restored their two-goal advantage when O’Grady dived in at the back post to head home Tom Elliott’s 71st minute corner. Liam Hardy made it 4-1 from another corner on 76 minutes before Diego De Girolamo completed the scoring four minutes from time beating King at the near post via the underside of the bar. Charles nearly scored a second for Rangers when his shot hit the post, but it would have been no consolation on a sorry day for the Marston Road side. Referee: Alex James Cautions: None
