Grantham Town inflicted more pressure on Stafford Rangers after the Lincolnshire side won the contest between two out of form sides. Grantham had just one point to show from their last six league games while Stafford’s haul of three from nine was little better and the quality on show was befitting of two sides at the wrong end of the table. Rangers were without Sam Coulson who was suspended after being sent off at Nantwich on Boxing Day, allowing a recall for Paul Bignot at right back with Josh Green moving into midfield.
Rangers had the better of the first quarter but had nothing to show for their early domination. Jake Charles had a couple of chances blocked and, with the pressure still on, Matt Hill forced a save from Jon Worsnop low to his right. Dan Hawkins tried unsuccessfully to lift one over Worsnop from the inside left channel while Josh Green fired wide from around 30 yards out as Stafford remained on top. Grantham’s first shot on target came midway through the first half. A deep free kick from Charlie Ward put the ball into the Rangers’ area and Andre Johnson produced a smart turn and shot which was straight at Lewis King. A couple of minutes later, King made a good save to deny Remaye Campbell, but Rangers remained the most attacking of the two sides but lacked the potency needed. Charles exchanged passes with Jack Sherratt but fired tamely across the face of goal then Jaiden White missed out with a shot directed straight at Worsnop when well placed. Charles and Sherratt also missed out while, at the other end, Jon Moran made an excellent tackle to keep out Johnson. The second half got off to a slow and uninspiring start although the introduction of the lively Jacob Green gave Grantham the edge. The Gingerbread’s sub produced the first serious effort on goal with a shot from the angle which Matt Hill cautiously watched go across the face of goal. A couple of minutes later, King saved well to his left from Declan Dunn and Craig Westcarr in quick succession, but Grantham went ahead on 72 minutes through Green who converted from close range after the Boro keeper had only half cut out Westcarr’s shot. Hawkins, Sherratt, Green and Charles all missed out as Stafford pressed for an equaliser then White fired over from a good position. But Grantham struck the killer blow with a minute remaining as Dunn sent Westcarr clear to slot home the home side’s second.
