Kidderminster Harriers 0 – 0 Stafford Rangers
Emirates FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round Saturday 21 September 2019 Report by Chris Elsley
Attendance | Att 950 (inc 129 Stafford)
Stafford Rangers earned themselves a replay after a sterling defensive display saw them hold National League North outfit Kidderminster Harriers to a goal-less draw at Aggborough. Rangers made three changes to the side that drew with FC United a week earlier with Jed Davies making his first start of the season while Joe Berks returned for the first time since the opening day. The first half was pretty much one-way traffic with the hosts providing most of the attacking play, but they found a stubborn Stafford defence blocking their way. Rhys Williams was presented with the first opportunity inside three minutes, but the tall defender planted his header wide of the target. Soon after, a low ball from Ashley Chambers on the left almost saw Richard Peniket grab the opener but the ball stayed agonisingly a foot out before Lewis King smothered. King kept out two more efforts, from Chambers and Peniket, then Sam Austin had two shots blocked - by Alex-Ray Harvey and Luke Jones - as Kidderminster kept pressing. Another good chance fell to Peniket, but he headed wide when well-placed then King saved an effort from Correy Davidson after Ed Williams had intercepted Milan Butterfield’s long-range drive. Rangers’ best period came around the half hour mark which saw Joe Berks shoot harmlessly at Tom Palmer then Josh Green was just off target with a shot from around 25 yards out. King nearly gifted Harriers with the lead when he spilled a shot from Declan Weeks, but Green was on hand to clear.
Kidderminster had made an early substitution with Peniket replaced by Alex Prosser on 35 mins and it was the latter’s cross to the back post was nearly converted by a stretching Chambers, but the ball deflected wide off the outside of the post. Right on the stroke of half time, King made a crucial save when he turned over a deflected shot from Williams. Harriers didn’t look quite so dominant after the break as they seemed to run short of ideas and Rangers were happy to let them pass the ball across the middle of the park. In fact, it was the Boro who created the first real chance midway through the half when Jake Charles appeared to be bundled to the ground as he ran to meet a good ball from Sam Coulson, but the referee was having none of it. Luke Jones had Kidderminster in further trouble when he headed Green’s free kick back across goal, but it didn’t fall for Dan Burns then Coulson’s shot was half blocked before Palmer gratefully smothered. The closing stages saw Kidderminster press strongly for the winner but the nearest they came was in stoppage time when sub Ollie Shenton - on loan from Stoke City - saw his shot parried by King and Green cleared the danger. There was one more chance for the home side with the last kick of the game, but Butterfield was unable to steer Prosser’s centre on target and both sides will have to meet again to see which one takes their place in the 3rd Qualifying Round.
