Stafford Rangers are still searching for their first victory of the season after Monday’s Bank Holiday trip to Mickleover Sports ended in defeat thanks to a late penalty. Rangers, who were still without the injured Tom Thorley, made one change from the side beaten by Matlock on Saturday with Jack Sherratt replacing Andy Haworth. Despite the result, this was probably Rangers’ best performance of the season so far but it’s goals that count and if Rangers’ tally of two from four games doesn’t improve, they are going to struggle.
Rangers had two former Sports’ players in their starting line up with keeper Lewis King and forward Evan Garnett and it was the latter who was the busier from the off, firing wide of the near post in the 3rd minute. Garnett had another opening on the 15-minute mark when Sherratt launched a counter attack but Mickleover’s young keeper Nathan Broome - on loan from Stoke City - came out bravely to block the chance. After a rare shot on goal from Mickleover, courtesy of a Mason Warren free kick that King took with ease, Broome made another good stop - this time to keep out Theo Bailey-Jones. Rangers kept searching for a breakthrough. Sherratt’s shot was headed away by Richard Batchelor and Josh Green fired wide of the far post and the Boro had to settle for level terms as they went in at the break. Mickleover showed a little more purpose after the break and King had to save well from Jake Scott. Immediately, Rangers went on the attack. Bailey-Jones laid off to Jake Charles, but Broome parried, and Greg Young cleared the rebound off the toes of Bailey-Jones. Soon after, Broome saved again to deny the same two Rangers’ players. With the heat taking its toll, the game appeared to be heading for a goal-less draw until referee Gareth Davis decided that Dan Burns had hauled Nathan Modest to the ground and Warren stepped up to score the 85th minute winner from the penalty spot.
