Stafford Rangers survived a last-minute penalty to pick up a point from their trip to Morpeth Town. Rangers fielded the same starting XI that knocked Kidderminster Harriers out of the FA Cup with newcomer Robert Thompson-Brown having to settle for a place on the substitute’s bench. After an even opening, Rangers took a 10th minute lead through Joe Berks following the youngster’s strong run down the inside right channel and his shot finding the back of the net via the far post. Rangers came close to adding to their lead through an acrobatic effort from Jake Charles. With the pressure still on, Alex-Ray Harvey combined with Evan Garnett to force a save from Dan Lowson. From the resulting corner, Lowson kept out Luke Jones’ header.
Morpeth gradually got a foothold in the game and Lewis King had to save well when Chris Reid burst into the area. A soft handball by Dan Burns lead to Morpeth’s equaliser a minute before the break. A well-planned free kick taken by Sean Reid was laid off by Liam Henderson and Wayne Phillips fired home from the edge of the area. Joe Walton fired wide of the far post as Morpeth made a positive start to the second half but Rangers should have restored their lead just before the hour when Thompson-Brown - on for the injured Jake Charles - fired straight at Lowson when given time and space in the Morpeth area. Morpeth came on strong again with Josh Green and Dan Burns both making important interventions at the back. At the other end, Coulson shot at Lowson with Andy Haworth well placed while Garnett fired over from around 15 yards out. Jeff Henderson missed two chances as Morpeth pressed for a winner in the closing stages, but their best opportunity came in added time when King clattered into Jack Foalle after missing his attempted clearance. King required lengthy treatment before redeeming himself by saving Walton’s spot kick. The drama was not yet over, and Thompson-Brown missed another chance with the last kick of the game, dragging his shot wide. Referee: Derric Wade Cautions: Turner (Morpeth), King, Green, D Burns, Berks, Davies (Rangers)
