Stafford Rangers conceded two goals in added time to hand a belated Christmas present to Nantwich Town in their Boxing Day fixture. Rangers made three changes to the side that was beaten by Lancaster City with Matt Hill, Brad Grayson and Jon Moran returning to the starting XI. A greasy pitch at the Weaver Stadium made conditions difficult for both sides and the first half was not the greatest of spectacles.
Nantwich just about shaded it by virtue of making the brighter start, but they were unable to take advantage of a series of free kicks won in and around the Stafford penalty area. The nearest they came was on 12 mins when Lewis King had to tip over a 20 yarder from Sean Cooke while King turned away another dead ball position from the same Nantwich player just short of the half hour mark. Rangers’ best effort came a couple of minutes before the interval when Dan Burns headed goal wards from Josh Green’s corner, but Joe Davies headed clear. Rangers received a blow early in the second half when Alex Ray Harvey picked up an injury and was replaced by Josh Burns. Nantwich were still asking most of the questions but were answering themselves with wayward finishing as Cooke and sub Joe Mwasile failing to hit the target. Instead, it was Rangers who were to open the scoring on 66 minutes. Josh Green sent in a deep free kick which was kept alive by Jack Sherratt. Jake Charles then delivered in an excellent centre where Jon Moran nipped in ahead of Dabber’s keeper Greg Hall to stab the ball home. Nantwich almost responded immediately as Ricardo Fuller tried to put one around King but failed to get enough curl on his shot. A couple of minutes later, the former Stoke City star saw his header thump into the foot of the post and back into the arms of the grateful Rangers’ keeper. Hill then made an excellent headed to clearance to deny Mwasile. Rangers thought they had scored a second goal when Grayson converted after a scramble following another Green free kick, but he was flagged offside. More bad luck was to follow on 81 minutes when midfielder Sam Coulson was sent off for a second yellow card after pulling back Fuller. But it looked like they would hold on as two headers from Joel Stair went wide then Will Saxon somehow headed over from underneath the crossbar. In the first minute of added time, Stafford had a great chance to kill the game off as they broke away in a 4v1 situation. But Florian Yonsian was unable to keep possession and Mwasile centred from the left for Stair to head in the equaliser. With their tails up, Nantwich sensed a winner and got it with just 15 seconds of added time remaining when Cooke drilled home from around ten yards out.
