Stafford Rangers’ search for a first league win league continues after they drew at Scarborough with a gritty display. Boro keeper Lewis King was in inspired form making a series of crucial saves to keep his side in the contest. Rangers fielded Bradley Grayson in place of the injured Jake Charles - the striker having signed on loan from Buxton - and he marked his debut with the equaliser on 66 mins after Scarborough had taken the lead midway through the first half. The home side were the first to threaten when James Walshaw found a yard of space, but King parried away. Soon after, Paul Walker spotted a good run from Kian Spence, but the defender’s touch was too heavy. A poor clearance from King opened the door for Scarborough as Michael Coulson played in Walshaw but King made amends flicking the ball away from Walshaw’s feet as the forward tried to take the ball around the keeper.
Stafford’s first effort of the day came from Evan Garnett, who saw his shot deflected over, but the home side continued to look the most likely to open the scoring, but another opportunity went begging with Ryan Watson’s tame effort. An important intervention from Paul Bignot stopped Walshaw then Isaac Assenso headed over from the resultant corner. Although Scarborough were creating most of the chances, it wasn’t all one-way traffic and Andy Haworth went close for Rangers when his shot was deflected into the side netting. But Scarborough finally made the pressure count on 23 minutes. A great ball from Chris Dawson found Spence and his square ball was steered into the net by Michael Coulson. King held a goal bound header from Walshaw then made an excellent block to prevent Dawson from doubling the lead. King made two excellent saves early in the second half, firstly denying Walker then Walshaw in the space of a minute. King went one better with three excellent saves in a single attack as Wayne Brooksby, Walshaw and Assenso were kept out. King’s heroics at the back were rewarded at the other end on 66 minutes when his long ball was gathered by Bradley Grayson who took a moment to compose himself before striking home the equaliser from the edge of the area. Michael Coulson could have restored Scarborough’s lead when he toe poked the ball in to King’s grateful arms. The game continued to flow from end to end as both sides fought for a winner. It was Rangers who came closest in added time when Sam Coulson headed Louis Briscoe’s free kick against the post.
