Two sides threatened with relegation fought out a goal-less draw at Marston Road. Although the match didn’t lack for effort, it did lack in goal scoring opportunities as neither keeper had a serious shot to save all night. Rangers did, at least, have some excuse as they had to reorganise just before half time following the sending off of Paul Bignot. As part of the deal that brought him to the club from the Bucks, Stafford striker Brad Grayson was unable to play against his former side which allowed a recall for Jake Charles in the only change from the side that drew at Witton three days earlier.
Rangers had a great chance to go ahead inside the first minute when Joe Cuff picked out Brandon Diau with a first-time ball but the tall forward got tangled up and was unable to get in a shot. Buxton played the ball quickly out of defence and looked to launch a counterattack whenever possible but struggled to break down Stafford’s back line while the home side were guilty of giving the ball away too easily when in possession. The games’ key moment came on 36 mins when Bignot was sent off for a foul Jordan Nicholson as he set off to chase a long clearance out of the Buxton defence. Rangers were spared further punishment when Alex Byrne’s shot, following a short free kick, landed on the roof of the net. Sam Coulson dropped into the right back position vacated by Bignot. The best chance of the game fell to the visitors just before half time when Diego De Girolamo played the ball across the six-yard box but Nicholson, with the goal at his mercy, could only turn the ball against the far post. Alex Brown’s follow up was bravely blocked by Jon Moran. Despite being a man down, it was Rangers who looked the more adventurous after the interval. A 25-yard snapshot from Diau was straight at Grant Shenton while Cuff’s effort from further out went well wide. Tom Thorley hit a powerful drive which cannoned up off Aaron Chalmers, knocking the Buxton captain off his feet. Another effort from Thorley made its way, untroubled, through to Shenton. The final shot of the game came from Charles who let fly from around 25 yards but once again Shenton was well placed to make a comfortable save. Rangers may well view this as a couple of points dropped but they showed a battling spirit following the sending off that extends their unbeaten league run to four matches.
