There was no new year change of fortune at Marston Road as Stafford Rangers suffered yet another defeat in a game that they should have won. Rangers had more of the ball then their visitors and had more shots on goal but while they fired blanks, Mickleover’s only shot on target throughout the entire 90 minutes was enough to see them take the points. Rangers were missing Alex Ray Harvey for the first time this season with the midfielder still suffering from the injury that limited his participation in the Boxing Day defeat at Nantwich.
Mickleover launched the first attack on goal with a swift move as Lee Hughes and Stuart Beavon combined to put Patrick Webb clear but Dan Burns forced him to shoot wide. Rangers were soon on the attack themselves and had the ball in the net inside 5 minutes, but the goal was ruled out for handball. Brad Grayson was gifted with a great chance soon after, but he shot wide. On another day, Grayson could have picked up a hat trick inside the first 15 minutes as another effort was blocked by Durrell Berry while he sent a third opportunity high and wide from Jack Sherratt’s knock down. Sherratt himself tried his luck from the edge of the area. His shot was always missing but a touch from Jake Charles would have produced a positive result - sadly, it was not forthcoming. An excellent save from Nathan Broome denied Charles following Josh Green’s free kick. The on loan Stoke keeper was less troubled by Sherratt’s 30 yarder shortly before half time while Dan Hawkins saw his shot go just the wrong side of the post seconds later. A first half of Stafford dominance ended goal-less as the Boro failed to make the most of their possession with a lack of conviction in the Mickleover area. The second half opened with a similar script as Broome kept out Green’s free kick which had the accuracy but lacked the necessary venom. Charles headed wide from another free kick, but Rangers found chances less forthcoming. Instead, Mickleover launched the classic ‘smash and grab’ raid on 72 mins as Ryan Nesbitt sent Webb away and he outpaced Dan Burns before slotting past Lewis King. Rangers’ luck was summed up with a couple of minutes remaining when Green’s through ball put Grayson in space, but his shot struck the inside of the post and somehow stayed out.
