Stafford Rangers 0 – 2 Chasetown
Integro League Cup 1st Round | Tuesday 12 November 2019 Report by Chris Elsley

Two wonder goals from Jack Langston consigned Stafford Rangers to defeat in their Integro Cup 1st Round tie at home to Chasetown. Rangers fielded a strong starting XI with only Matt Hill and Alex Harvey absent from the side beaten at Warrington three days earlier. It was a game Rangers shouldn’t have lost. They controlled the first half and never really looked in any danger until an error from Lewis King presented Chasetown with their opener on 66 mins. The was the catalyst for the change in the balance of power. Rangers struggled to create much that looked like getting the scores back level and another error from King lead to Langston wrapping things up with his second ten minutes from time.
Jack Sherratt should have opened the scoring inside the opening 10 minutes after good work from Will McGuffie but both efforts were blocked. Brad Grayson’s appeals for a penalty went unanswered after he had gone to ground when turning past Ryan Wynter while Evan Garnett had a couple of efforts on goal - his first was diverted wide by Wynter and the second lacked power and accuracy. Joe Brown came closest to breaking the first half deadlock after Joe Berks had conceded possession midway inside the Rangers’ half. Brown advanced and sent in a shot that beat King but came back off the post. Another Stafford penalty appeal was turned down when Grayson looked to be inside the area when he was fouled. They had to settle for a free kick instead and Berks wasted the opportunity sending it high over the bar. Scholars’ keeper Curtis Pond ensured the two sides would go to the interval on level terms with a smart save from Garnett. Rangers had another good chance early in the second half when Shakeel Jones-Griffiths - on for McGuffie - squared from the right but neither Grayson nor Berks were able to apply the finishing touch. A minute later, Garnett went clear, but Pond was out quickly to block. Then came Langston’s opener. The former Stafford midfielder picked up on a poor clearance from King and with the Rangers’ keeper some way out of his goal, Langston struck a 30 yarder towards the empty net as King desperately tried to get back. Sherratt wasted a chance to equalise when he fired his shot high and over the top of the Shed End roof. At the other end, Langston missed a great chance to put the game to bed, but he saved his best for a minute later. King was slow to get back after a free kick near the left corner flag and Langston spotted his chance and netted from just inside the Rangers’ half. Grayson had one more chance to set up a late comeback, but he dallied, and the chance was lost. Referee: Bradley Hall Cautions: D Burns, Jones-Griffiths, Green (Rangers), J Brown (Chasetown)
