Stafford Rangers turned in one of their most disappointing displays of the season and dropped back to the bottom of the table following defeat at home to 10-man Lancaster City. Rangers were without Brad Grayson who was still struggling with a hamstring injury picked up in the victory over Radcliffe a couple of weeks earlier. Loan player Florian Yonsian stepped up from the bench to replace him in the starting XI. The visitors had the better of the first half and took a two-goal lead into the interval. Rangers showed a little more about themselves at the start of the second half before Lancaster struck a killer third.
The visitors had an early chance when Robert Wilson put Charlie Bailey away, but his shot went wide of the far post. Soon after, David Norris and Brad Carsley combined only for Josh Burns to deflect the latter’s shot into the side netting. But it was from the resulting corner that Lancaster took a 16th minute lead with Sam Bailey’s flag kick going in via the head of Glenn Steel from a foot out. Charlie Bailey forced a parried save from Lewis King after Josh Burns had dallied on the ball before Lancaster extended their lead on 35 minutes with a close-range header from Matthew Blikhorn following Sam Bailey’s free kick, needlessly conceded near to the corner flag. But there was an ugly side to Lancaster’s game and Charlie Bailey was lucky to escape with just a caution for a stamp on Jaiden White. The Dolly Blues’ wide man could have no complaints when got his marching orders for another late challenge on the same player six minutes later. Stafford started the second half brightly without really threatening Sam Ashton in the Lancaster goal. The nearest they came was when Steel almost headed past his own keeper when he tried to cut out Dan Hawkins’ cross. Otherwise, Jack Sherratt had three shots on goal - all from distance - with two going well wide and the other going harmlessly through to Ashton. At the other end, Carsley wasted a great chance to add a third for Lancaster when he beat the offside trap, but he made a feeble attempt to beat Lewis King with the opportunity to lob so inviting. Rangers’ hopes of a comeback were well and truly finished on 63 minutes when Carsley took advantage of an error from King who was caught out on the edge of his area and advanced to score despite the best efforts of Josh Burns. From then on, Lancaster were content to sit back¬¬ and Stafford had no answer. The home side kept plugging away but couldn’t break down a well organised and robust Lancaster defence. Josh Green came closest to reducing the arrears but was just off target with a curler aimed for the top corner while Jake Charles’ free kick and Hawkins’ late header went the same way.
