Stafford Rangers boosted their survival hopes by recording just their third league win of the season. Substitute Jake Charles came off the bench to score the only goal of the game with 20 minutes remaining after Scarborough had a man sent off early in the second half. Joe Cuff was in the starting line-up after re-joining the club in midweek while Jono Brown remained in goal with Lewis King still unfit. Missing from the squad was Joe Berks who has opted to join Chasetown. In an entertaining match, it was the visitors who showed the early initiative and a smart move on their left ended with James Walshaw firing over. It was a great opportunity that the prolific striker would have expected to take.
It took Rangers some time to bring Scarborough keeper Tom Taylor into action. When they did, Taylor comfortably saved Dan Hawkins’ low drive. A misplaced defensive header from Harry Coates forced Taylor into further action as he had to claw away the ball from his top left corner. A few seconds later Cuff sent a high ball in that Taylor spilled but Brad Grayson was unable to take advantage, but the referee awarded Scarborough a free kick for reasons unknown. Connor Thomson moved into a dangerous position for Scarborough, but his run was halted by Paul Bignot’s timely intervention. Cuff put in a decent effort from a tight angle as Rangers grew stronger with Turner doing well to turn it over for a corner. Seconds earlier, Jack Sherratt scuffed a shot when well placed on the edge of the D. As play switched back, a quick counter from the visitors saw Wayne Brooksby shoot wide of the near post. Referee: Greg Rollason Cautions: Moran (Rangers) Sent Off: Brooksby (Scarborough) The last 15 minutes of the first half was devoid of clear chances at either end despite the efforts of both sides. Scarborough began the second half a gear ahead of Rangers and had the ball in the net, but Thomson was flagged offside. Seconds earlier, Brown had saved from Josh Barrett with his feet and Michael Coulson headed against the post. A key moment in the game came on 53 minutes when Sherratt’s header looked to put Sam Coulson in but Brooksby pulled him back. As the last defender, Brooksby saw red and the visitors had to continue with 10 men. Though the free kick came to nothing, Rangers came close a couple of minutes later as Taylor spilled Sherratt’s shot. Grayson snapped up the loose ball but was given offside. At the other end, a bad bobble saw Thomson’s shot almost catch Brown out but the Boro keeper recovered quickly to gather at the second attempt. Cuff wasted a good chance after beating two Scarborough players, but Charles found the target on 70 mins when he found space on the left and flashed a shot past Taylor at the near post. Charles had chances to add a second in the closing stages with Taylor saving well when the Stafford player just had the keeper to beat but the one goal proved to be enough.
