Stafford Rangers 2 – 0 Brocton
Staffs Senior Cup Quarter Final | Tuesday 21 January 2020
Attendance | 192
Holders Stafford Rangers booked themselves a place in the semi finals of the Staffs Senior Cup as they eased past local rivals Brocton. It was the second cup meeting between the two sides this season with Rangers having disposed of the Badgers 4-0 in the Walsall Senior Cup and though the margin of victory wasn’t so great this time around, the Boro never looked like slipping up. It was only in the final 10 minutes that Brocton created a real threat but their best effort - from sub Ben Wood - was tipped over by keeper Jono Brown. Rangers controlled large parts of the first half and created the majority of what goal mouth action there was.
Joe Berks was first to break through but failed to apply the brakes and ran the ball out for a goal kick. A couple of minutes later, Berks fired over from around 8 yards out. It was a bad miss. Brocton defended in numbers to deny Rangers much more of a look in until Sam Coulson finally broke the deadlock on the half hour when he headed home from Josh Green’s left wing corner. Soon after, Green when for goal himself but his shot from around 20 yards out went harmlessly wide. Rangers had a strong penalty claim waved away when Kenny Devoir appeared to foul Jazz Luckie then Matt Hill looked set to extend the lead but his close range shot rolled across the face of goal before Jamie Weldon ran the ball out of danger. Rangers finally got their second two minutes in to the second half when Jed Davies played in Berks and his first time shot took a deflection off Jamie Weldon to totally deceive Henry Smith in the Brocton goal. Weldon made amends somewhat when he headed away Paul Bignot’s goal bound shot then Smith denied Berks after some good play by the midfielder. Rangers gave Brad Grayson and Jake Charles a twenty minute run out and the former almost added a third with a delicate chip but Smith tracked back to claw the ball away when it was heading for the top corner. The Brocton keeper doubled up by saving Jaiden White’s follow up. Having used all three of their own subs, Brocton stepped up the necessary gear and Cam Osborne fired just over the upright with their first real effort on goal. Soon after, Brown turned Wood’s 25 yarder over the bar but that was as close as the visitors got and in the final exchanges, it was Rangers who could have added to the scoring with Charles and Grayson both going just wide and Smith keeping out White in a one on one.
