Stafford Rangers are off the bottom of the table after recording their first home win of the season against high flying Radcliffe. It was a fully deserved result for Rangers who dominated from the off and didn’t let the in-form Lancashire club have much of a look in. Rangers fielded newcomer Daniel Hawkins who arrived on loan from Salford City while another newcomer from Salford, Florian Yonsian, was on the bench. Both sides got into promising positions in the early exchanges without producing a serious shot on target. The nearest Rangers came was through a glancing header from Brad Grayson which went over the Radcliffe bar.
Radcliffe best opportunity fell to Ben Wharton who turned Sam Coulson but sent his shot high over the bar. It was midway through the first half that either keeper was called into action with Oliver Martin forced to save from Jake Charles. Jaiden White’s effort from the rebound looped up off a Radcliffe defender and Martin claimed the ball underneath his crossbar. Radcliffe responded with a well struck volley from Kingsley Williams, but it was straight at Lewis King. Rangers were gradually looking more and more assured. Scott Metcalfe stuck out a boot to deny Jack Sherratt then Josh Green fired over from the edge of the area. The breakthrough finally came on 37 minutes when Green sent a long ball forward for Charles who took advantage of a moment’s hesitation between Martin and defender Richard Smith and walked the ball into the unguarded net. Josh Burns, harshly cautioned in the fourth minute of the game, was a little fortunate to stay on the field for another foul on Tyrese Sinclair. The closing stages of the half saw Rangers go close to a second with Charles just failing to connect with Brad Grayson’s centre while Martin had to dive to his left to deny Hawkins. Rangers stayed on top at the start of the second half but efforts from Jack Sherratt, White and Grayson didn’t really trouble the visiting keeper. Grayson had a better opportunity when he got behind Tyrell Warren, but Martin made a good block. Elliot Rokka tried his luck, but King saved from the substitute and King saved again after Anton Forrester had returned a pass to Sinclair. Referee: Simon Brown Cautions: J Burns, Hawkins, Sherratt, Charles (Rangers), Metcalfe, Sinclair, Warren, Winter (Radcliffe) Rangers needed a second and it came on 75 mins via penalty from Charles after Warren and tripped Yonsian. Like Burns earlier, Radcliffe’s Scott Metcalfe was also fortunate to escape a second yellow when he felled White although Metcalfe had been hard done to with his initial caution for diving. Williams had one final chance to reduce the arrears but sent the ball high over the bar, leaving Rangers to celebrate their first home success.
