Stafford Rangers gave their slim survival hopes a boost with a dominant display against in form Whitby Town. Rangers made the brighter start and created their first chance inside two minutes but Jake Charles’ header - from Josh Green’s freekick - was saved by Shane Bland. Brad Grayson had a chance to open the scoring after Stafford stretched the Whitby back line but Evan Horwood’s intervention sent the ball out for a corner. It was much against the run of play that Whitby took a 14th minute lead. The ball found its way through to Horwood, but he declined to shoot. The visitors kept possession and, after both Jake Hackett and Horwood had not gone for goal, Keiron Weledji took his chance, with a shot through Lewis King.
But Rangers were back level in two minutes. Jake Charles cut in from the right before spotting Alex Harvey in space and he let fly from 25 yards with an unstoppable shot. Stafford were the stronger of the two sides but were unable to create much of note. The best efforts both came from Brad Grayson who saw a first time shot on the run saved by Shane Bland then he was just off target from just inside the Whitby half following a poor clearance from the Whitby keeper. It was a similar story in the second half with Rangers making the early running. An excellent move saw Jack Sherratt’s drive cleared off the line by Alex White then, a minute later, Grayson’s drive from the edge of the D went just over. Charles missed a header at the back post from Tom Thorley’s cross then a bad bounce deceived Grayson forcing the forward to slice his shot well wide before Jon Moran drilled his shot straight at Bland. At the other end, Whitby sub Brad Fewster fired just over after a good long ball from White but it was Rangers - after a catalogue of missed chances - who finally found the mark on 86 minutes. Jazz Luckie outran White but he over hit his cross. Grayson picked up possession on the right and centred for Charles to head in the winner to secure just the fourth win of Rangers’ torrid season.
