A point gained or two points dropped? That was the question after Tuesday night’s draw with Gainsborough Trinity which saw Stafford Rangers lose a half time lead before salvaging a point with a last-minute equaliser. Rangers were unchanged from the side that beat Whitby three days earlier and they carried the confidence into this game by pressing Gainsborough from the off. Brad Grayson and Tom Thorley both had shots blocked inside the opening five minutes but in a fast all action start, Gainsborough came close themselves as Jordan Smith looked to be outpacing Paul Bignot. The was a hint of a pull back from Bignot but the referee gave the Stafford man the benefit of any doubt.
Nicky Walker fired over for the visitors, but it was Rangers who opened the scoring on 12 minutes with a clinical breakaway. Thorley’s ball from 15 yards inside the Stafford half sent Jack Sherratt clear and though George Willis made the initial save, Jake Charles followed up to score. Thorley went close to doubling the lead when he ran in to head Charles’ cross, but this time Willis held on to the ball. An inspired Thorley then made another opening with another good ball, but Grayson put his shot wide with just Willis to beat. Grayson was denied by Willis again after Sherratt put him in. Despite Rangers looking the better side the one goal lead was made to look fragile in the closing stages of the half as Lewis King had to save to keep out Jordan Smith after the Gainsborough man had got the better of Jon Moran while Gregg Smith failed to connect with Ahmed Salam’s cross with the goal at his mercy. Walker blazed over from the edge of the D early in the second half, but Gainsborough got their equaliser on 52 minutes when Walker’s cross was diverted into his own net by Stafford skipper Jon Moran. Both sides had chances to go ahead as Declan Bacon needed a couple of extra inches of height to convert Jordan Smith’s cross then Grayson’s appeals for a penalty fell on deaf ears after a break launched by Sam Coulson. Rangers were made to pay for their missed opportunities when Bacon hammered Gainsborough in front on 73 minutes when Russell’s deep cross was knocked down into his path. Russell nearly added a third but could only find the side netting from Jordan Smith’s cross. But Rangers threw everything forward in the final stages and were rewarded a minute into added time when Charles slammed in the equaliser from the penalty spot after Josh Green had been tripped by James.
