Not for the first time this season, Stafford Rangers dropped points by conceding a late goal as Warrington netted in added time to secure a share of the spoils. Back in November, the Wires took all three points with a late winner at the Cantilever Stadium and, on Saturday, they exposed Rangers’ inability to see the game out once more with a heart-breaking equaliser. Rangers were still without keeper Lewis King but his replacement, Jono Brown, once again showed his talents, most notably with a first half penalty save that kept Rangers on level terms.
Jazz Luckie - on his return to the club - could only make the substitute’s bench and he was joined by striker Jake Charles with Sam Coulson somewhat surprisingly taking over the no 9 shirt. The first half was an uninspiring affair with Rangers not looking much more than a bottom of the table side while Warrington failed to show anything that would suggest a side pushing for promotion. The opening twelve minutes were most notable for the referee changing the ball twice, the man in black obviously keen to make his mark. There were few clear chances until the final ten minutes of the 45. A defensive mix up between Tom Warren and Scott Sephton let in Sam Coulson but the makeshift forward shot wide of the target. He should have done better. A minute later, Warrington’s Scott Brown was cautioned for his protests after not being awarded a penalty, but his side got their chance on 41 minutes when Matt Hill was penalised for hauling down Ben Garrity. Jono Brown chose right and parried Bohan Dixon’s spot kick and kept out Mark Roberts' follow up effort. Prior to these moments, the best effort of the half came from Warrington’s Jack Mackreth, but he found the angle too tight as the ball bounced across the face of goal. For Stafford, Jack Sherratt should have done better when he intercepted a poor clearance from Mitch Duggan, but he sent his shot high over. Rangers had the brighter of the opening exchanges in the second half. Brad Grayson got in Rangers’ first shot on target, but it didn’t test Tony McMillan although the Wires’ keeper had to work harder to keep out another Grayson effort soon after. But it was Warrington who broke the deadlock on 55 minutes when Dylan Vassallo sent Tony Gray clear and he advanced to slot past Brown. Rangers had penalty appeals rejected when Grayson’s shot struck Dixon. Josh Green saw yellow for his protests. McMillan made a good reflex save to deny Grayson who got a deflection on Green’s free kick, but Rangers got back level on 71 minutes when Charles - a replacement for Jaiden White - fired in via the underside of the cross bar. Two minutes later, Rangers were in front. A crunching tackle from Jon Moran won possession and when Dan Hawkins was able to clip in a centre from the left, Grayson sent his header past McMillan. Warrington made a triple substitution as they sought to get back on terms. They thought they had got the equaliser on 86 minutes when Roberts slid in after Jack Dunn’s free kick had hit the post but the visiting skipper was flagged offside. The game was entering the last of four added minutes when the visitors broke Rangers. Garrity headed forward and sub Josh Amis lifted the ball over the advancing Brown to rob Rangers of two points.
