Stafford Rangers booked themselves a 3rd Qualifying Round tie at Stourbridge after dumping National League North side Kidderminster Harriers out of the FA Cup in Tuesday night’s replay. It was another sterling effort from Rangers but whereas in the first game they were more defensively minded, on their own turf, Rangers took the game to Kidderminster from the off. Jake Charles had an early opportunity blocked before Joe Berks’ shot from distance just evaded the touch of Evan Garnett. Kidderminster, although forced to do more defensive work than they had three days earlier, still posed a threat, but it took them 25 minutes to ask a question of Stafford keeper Lewis King. It was a clever free kick, rolled short to Declan Weeks who curled his shot around the outside of the wall but King, diving to his left, kept his goal intact. But then, on 28 mins, Rangers broke the deadlock after almost two hours of football between two old rivals. Jed Davies’ deep free kick was headed down to Berks by Luke Jones and his shot was turned in at the back post by Dan Burns.
Weeks was Kidderminster’s main threat and he looked to restore parity soon after with a shot from distance but again King parried. Rangers, who have struggled for goals all season, then extended their lead four minutes before the interval. Superb tracking back from Charles, dispossessed Harriers’ Ryan Johnson and the ball found Berks on the right-hand side. He whipped it in but, somehow, Garnett failed to convert from close range, sending his header against the post. But the ball came out to Josh Green some 30 yards out and he curled a beauty into the top corner, giving Kiddy keeper Tom Palmer no chance. The visitors needed to do something and started strongly after the break. Correy Davidson had the first chance to reduce the arrears but headed over from Sam Austin’s cross when in a good position. King saved twice in quick succession from Ryan Johnson and Davidson while Josh Burns took the full force of Milan Butterfield’s shot and needed treatment. Kiddy’s pressure looked to have paid off in the 73rd minute when sub Jaiden White turned smartly in the area resulting in Green handling. Ashley Chambers stepped up but delivered one of the worst penalties seen at Marston Road for many a year, sending the ball high over the Social Club roof and rising into the night sky. It was a chance gone begging for Kiddy and Jake Charles showed them how it is done when he wrapped up the tie in the 87th minute with the perfect penalty, firing into the roof of the net after he had been tripped by Rhys Williams.
