Stafford Rangers 6 – 2 RAF Representative XI

Walsall Senior Cup 2nd Round | Tuesday 26 November 2019

Report by Chris Elsley

Attendance: 128

Stafford Rangers recorded a moral boosting victory over the RAF Representative side in their Walsall Senior Cup 2nd Round tie. Rangers looked the more organised of the two sides in the early play and Sam Coulson had a chance in the second minute as RAF keeper Christian Paulatt-Brigg fumbled the midfielder’s initial effort, but Coulson wasn’t alert to the follow up chance and Paulatt-Brigg tipped over. Shakeel Jones-Griffiths then missed out when he couldn’t get above the bounce from Jake Charles’ cross. The RAF were soon in attacking mode themselves, but David Webb failed to make clean contact when well placed. But Rangers remained in control with Coulson going just wide while Paulatt-Brigg held on to Josh Green’s high free kick just under his cross bar. At the other end, Webb forced a save from Lewis King with a decent strike from the edge of the area before Rangers finally got their noses in front on 18 minutes. Persistence from Jaiden White saw him get past Lewis Brownhill and he squared across goal to give Charles the easiest of tap ins.
Charles should have had another three minutes later when Alex-Ray Harvey’s through ball put him clear, but he wasn’t 100% committed to the opportunity and the RAF keeper was able to collect. Rangers kept pressing and, after Ben Greenwood’s intervention denied Charles another opportunity, Coulson slammed in the second on 24 minutes after Dan Burns’ header had struck the bar. Rangers put more daylight between the two sides on 33 mins. Brad Grayson did well to keep the ball in play after Charles flicked on Green’s free kick and Dan Burns was on the goal line to snap up the chance. The RAF side always looked capable of undoing the Rangers’ defence at some point, but a lack of quality let them down at the crucial times. Michael Atkinson sent Brownhill clear. King saved but in unconvincing manner and the ball squirmed out for a corner. The RAF enjoyed a strong finish to the half as Brownhill and Atkinson both saw shots deflected wide while a corner went unconverted as it bobbled across the face of the Rangers’ goal. Jake Gosling missed out on another half chance early in the second half when he declined a first time shot and Rangers made certain of their progress when Charles stroked in the fourth on 55 minutes after White and Grayson had linked on the left. White deservedly got his name on the scoresheet on 69 minutes after Paulatt-Brigg had denied Evan Garnett and diverted Grayson’s follow up on to the cross bar. Dan Burns grabbed his second of the night six minutes later when Louis Briscoe set him up from Green’s free kick. The RAF earned themselves some reward with two goals in the final ten minutes. Webb curled one past King from the edge of the area then, four minutes later, Gosling fired into an empty net from 35 yards after King’s kick from near the left corner flag had failed to clear the lines. Grayson and Garnett both came close to a seventh for Rangers but, overall, it was a job well done. Referee: Greg Rollason Cautions: None
