Staffs Senior Cup 2nd Round | Wednesday 4 December 2019 Report by Chris Elsley

Stafford Rangers booked themselves a place in the last 8 of the Staffs Senior Cup with victory over Stone Old Alleynians on Wednesday night. Their reward is a home tie against Brocton. It was the first ever competitive fixture between the two clubs although they have met in the past for pre-season games. Rangers, whose only hope of silverware this year remains in the two County Cup competitions, fielded a strong side although Matt Hill, Alex Harvey and Jon Moran were unfit to play while Joe Berks was unavailable as permission wasn’t received from his parent club (Port Vale) in time. On a cold night at Yarnfield, Rangers got off to the perfect start by taking the lead inside four minutes when Brad Grayson got the slightest of touches to deflect Jake Charles’ header past Adam Alcock. The opportunity arose after Jack Sherratt broke away from the half way line but Alcock – one of three former Rangers players in the Stone side – forced the corner.
The Old Boys looked to hit back immediately and Dave Ablewhite fired just over before Jake Vernon headed wide at the near post from Will Byers’ cross. But, as the home side started to look more settled, Rangers struck their second on 20 mins. Charles took advantage of a slip in defence and cleverly clipped the ball over a defender before striking past Alcock from the edge of the area. Grayson should have added a third on 26 mins but somehow managed to miss from a yard out. The Boro appeared to take their foot of the gas and Stone enjoyed a strong finish to the half. Vernon put one high over when well-placed then forced Lewis King to tip over from a free kick wide on the left. With the last action of a competitive first half, Ollie Davies smashed a shot against the cross bar. Grayson missed out on two occasions early in the second half but Rangers looked comfortable with their two goal lead. The Old Boys enjoyed plenty of possession and could not be faulted for commitment but lacked the quality in the final third although they came within a whisker of reducing the arrears on 70 mins when David Ablewhite’s glancing header hit the post. The tie was all over two minutes later when Josh Green’s through ball put Grayson clear and this time he made no mistake. Alcock made three decent saves in the final ten minutes, keeping out Evan Garnett and Jaiden White before denying Grayson a hat trick on the stroke of full time. Cautions: None Ref: Ben Stott
