A late goal consigned Stafford Rangers to their third consecutive league defeat after they had looked set to cause an upset at Warrington Town. Warrington just about shaded the first period although Rangers grew stronger as the half developed. The home side were on the front foot from the off and Josh Green had to head Jack Mackrett’s cross off the line with the first meaningful attack. Rangers responded with shots from Evan Garnett and Brad Grayson; the former’s going wide while Wires’ keeper Tony McMillan had little difficulty in keeping out Grayson’s. Mackrett was Warrington’s key outlet and he almost created a goal for the home side on 17 mins when he cut in from the right. The chance looked to be lost when he passed to Jack Banister. Somehow the ball found Tony Gray goal side of the Rangers defence, but the ever-alert Lewis King came out quickly to make an important block.
Gray was in the action again five minutes later when he guided Mitch Duggan’s cross wide of the far post. Duggan himself went wide after a foul on Joe Berks had gone unpunished then Bohan Dixon could only find the side netting from a tight angle. Rangers’ plan was to try and hit Warrington on the break and they created more openings towards the latter stages of the half. Berks shot low at McMillan following Garnett’s lay off then had another effort blocked after some nice play between the same two Boro players. A solid first half performance from Stafford was rewarded on 53 mins when they took the lead. Berks delivered the corner from the right which was headed in by Paul Bignot for his first goal of the season. Mackrett and David Raven both wasted chances for Warrington while Rangers could have extended their lead when Grayson broke away, but he missed the chance to release Berks and the opportunity vanished. Will McGuffie tried a sneaky curler around the outside of Tom Warren but McMillan was not fooled. Another Grayson break was unproductive, and Warrington made Rangers pay when Ben Garrity stabbed home the equaliser on 71 minutes after King had failed to hold Dixon’s initial shot. Dixon was starting to look more threatening and put another effort over from the edge of the area. Another Rangers break - this time lead by Berks - came to nothing and when Mackrett missed a good chance at the other end it looked as though a point a piece would be the reward from a battling afternoon. But Warrington had other ideas and, two minutes from time, Garrity crossed for Gray to head in the winner after King had pushed away Dixon’s shot.
