Whitby Town 2 – 1 Stafford Rangers

Two first half errors proved costly as Stafford Rangers’ recent unbeaten run came to an end at a wet and windy Whitby Town. The game only went ahead after a late pitch inspection with rain and gale force winds making conditions atrocious. Rangers, without Paul Bignot (suspended) and Josh Green (injured), faced the wind in the first half and keeper Jono Brown frequently saw his kicks coming back towards him as they caught the wind. But it was Rangers who had the first opening only for Brad Grayson to produce an air shot in a good position 25 yards out. A poor back pass from Joe Cuff put Matthew Tymon in but Brown came out quickly to clear the danger.
Whitby broke through on 27 minutes. A tackle from Jon Moran saw the ball run across the edge of the area but it was Sam Coulson’s slip that left Brown exposed and Tymon, in the clear, rolled the ball into the net. Rangers had an immediate chance to level as Jaiden White released Joe Cuff, but Shane Bland saved. Grayson picked up the rebound but with the angle nigh on impossible, the best he could achieve was winning a corner. But it was largely backs to the wall for Rangers as Tymon fired over from distance and Brown had to push away a clearance from Moran that got caught in the wind. Whitby dealt their second blow four minutes before half time when Moran tripped Paul Blackett after getting caught in possession and the Whitby man struck home from the penalty spot. Whitby were first to show after the break with Brown saving from Blackett but Rangers were soon trying their luck with Cuff’s harmless looking ball forward bouncing awkwardly and Bland was forced to tip over while Jake Charles - on for White - fired wide when well placed. Whitby’s Evan Horwood was lucky to stay on the pitch when he was cautioned for time wasting and followed it with an act of dissent as he threw the ball into the ground. The referee’s patience with Whitby’s antics wore thin and three other Whitby players eventually followed Horwood into the book for time wasting offences. Bland continued to defy Rangers as he did well to prevent Alex White scoring an own goal then Grayson wasted a good chance after a crossfield ball from Cuff found its way through. A good strike from Cuff was pushed away by Bland but Rangers finally got back into the game on 79 minutes when Brandon Diau’s header from Brown’s free kick flew into the net. Rangers threw everything forward and Bland pushed away a shot from Grayson but were almost caught out as Blackett got behind Coulson, but Brown stood his ground well to save. Rangers’ last chance came 8 minutes into added time, but Bland tipped over from Dan Burns’ header. Referee: Glen Hart Cautions: Horwood, Roper, Gell, Tymon, Patton (all Whitby)
