El Staffico spoils shared in behind closed doors!

This was quite a surreal “El Staffico”, with Covid-19 restrictions ensuring a double figure crowd and none of the usual passion from Keys Park terraces as two developing squads went head to head. Rangers were straight on the attack with a first minute attack and dangerous cross from their wing back trialist being cleared for a corner.

From then, the hosts took charge, with early pressure on the Boro goal. A strong looking George Cater looked to impose himself on his former club and he drew Sam Coulson into committing a foul on the left side of the box, before another couple of threatening runs that showed Rangers might be in for a hard time. On ten minutes Danny Glover put Dan Turner in with a header through the right channel. He bore down on goal but fired over when he should have tested Lewis King. Not long after this, a cross into the box saw Glover plant a header onto the bar where it struck, then bounced back down onto the bar before danger was cleared.

Then an excellent diagonal ball found Cater and he found the side netting with a powerful drive and then Bailey came close with a header into King’s arms. From the half hour mark Rangers were starting to impose themselves and John Welsh first drew a save with a shot then, from the resulting corner, fired just wide from 18 yards. More pressure followed as the tide turned and Joe Cuff worked the ball down the left and curled a ball to the back post where trialist (9) managed to head wide when under the bar.

Half time came and Rangers persisted with the first half team while Pitmen rang a few changes. Sebbeh-Njie curled an effort just wide after half time and on 50 minutes the hosts took the lead as Cater fed Glover who found the bottom corner from 18 yards with a neat finish. This half was a bit more even and the rare sight of a booking in a friendly came on 58 minutes as Pitmen’s Rhys Thompson hauled down Mo Sebbeh-Njie on halfway.

Not long after this Rangers made changes with 7 players being swapped. Those moves seem to shake things up and they had more bite and ideas. The hosts chances were now more limited, and Rangers had more control in the middle and more movement up front with the introduction of Jamie Sleigh and Andre Johnson.

More movement and more pressure eventually added up. on 76 minutes, as a low ball delivered into the box was turned in with a real poacher’s finish by Sleigh making it 4 goals in his first 3 appearances to make it 1-1. On 82 it was almost a snatched lead for Rangers as Josh Green cut in and curled just wide of the post. The closing stages saw both sides hold firm and another moment of note was Boro former boss Alex Meechan coming on as a sub for George Cater!

Eric honoured by Staffs FA

Eric honoured by Staffs FA

In the early days of lockdown and the formation of the Business Continuity Group one of the pleasures we had was to submit Eric Robins name to the FA, who were running a competition for Volunteer of The Year. We knew that Eric was a great candidate for the award due to his fantastic efforts over many years and Alan Gee submitted the official nomination.

His nomination led the Staffs FA to carry out some additional research on Eric and all he had done for Stafford Rangers. This culminated in Eric receiving not the volunteer of the year award but the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the Club today, from Staffordshire FA representative Gareth Thomas. The Business Continuity Group together with Director Carol Bailey surprised Eric at the ground who was presented with a framed certificate from the FA in recognition of his fantastic efforts and achievements. An official awards ceremony will be carried out by Staffs FA at the earliest opportunity.

Eric, as modest as ever but thrilled by the award stated ‘I can only do what I do with the support of the fans and all the people at the club’

Everyone who goes to Marston Road knows Eric and knows that his fundraising efforts are legendary and we are all so proud of not just what he has done but the way in which he goes about things.

We all congratulate him for achieving such wonderful recognition from the regional governing body and know you will join us in applauding Eric’s loyalty and efforts on what was a special day for us all.

The Northern Premier League Football Academy (NPLFA), the Southern League Football Academy (SLFA) and the Isthmian League Football Academy (ILFA) have today merged to become the Education and Semi-Professional Football Academy (ESPFA).

The ESPFA was originally developed as the overarching organisation of the three step seven leagues – Northern Premier League, Southern League and Isthmian League – education and football programmes and the merger of all three under one official brand brings new opportunities and experiences for all students and clubs involved.

The NPLFA was created in partnership with Eliteform LTD and the Northern Premier League in 2014 to become the first ever league wide education and football programme in the UK.

An initial pilot programme that began in 2014/15 saw 75 students enrol at five member clubs and the success from the inaugural year saw the programme expand to over 300 students at 13 clubs by 2019.

In 2018 the Southern League joined and a year later, the SLFA began with seven member clubs and over 100 students.

Soon after in 2019, the Isthmian League became the third and final league at step seven of the English national pyramid system to join.

With the ILFA Scheduled to begin in 2021, the ESPFA was established as an overarching organisation to manage all three-individual league programmes across the nation and has appeared on all marketing throughout the 2019/20 season.

From today the ESPFA is now the ‘official further and higher education partners of the Northern Premier League, the Southern League and the Isthmian League.’

An exciting new chapter awaits with the new organisation providing new and improved pathways on and off the pitch, new experiences and opportunities, more competitive games, more flexibility on competitions as well as opening up new club partners from other leagues.

The new branding will further strengthen our excellent relationships with all three leagues and Eliteform LTD would like to thank all league officials involved for their support over the previous six years.

Newcastle Town 2 Stafford Rangers 2

On a hot afternoon at Lyme Valley, Rangers’ evolving squad were put through a decent test by a plucky Newcastle Town. With 6 trialists in the opening line up, it was Rangers who showed more purpose and had better possession early on. However, not for the want of trying, the front two trialist pairing could not make the most of the early pressure. It took half an hour for the hosts to launch a serious amount of pressure, forcing a corner and then an attack forcing King into a good save. While Rangers started stronger, Town finished the half on top and with a couple more close calls the half drew to an end and chance for a reshuffle.

The second half saw both teams ring changes, but Rangers made the most with just King remaining from the first 45. Rangers were quickly into their stride as Josh Green whipped in a cross and Jamie Sleigh headed the opener. Joe Cuff then attacked down the left and his cross-cum-shot evaded the keeper, but nobody followed up. Sleigh was also denied another by the post, having shot across the keeper and seeing the shot hit the woodwork and roll across the face of goal. After a period of the new 11 settling and looking the better team, Town raised their game and asserted more pressure. Closing down and dispossessing in the middle of the park they broke and Ryan Baxter equalised. Not long after, with more pressure down the left, Town won a corner and this was swung to the back where James Askey rise to head the hosts into a lead. Rangers responded and started to win more balls and it was midfield possession that saw the equaliser as a ball was excellently threaded through and Sleigh beat his marker drew the keeper and lobbed home an excellent late leveller. With many getting a run out under testing conditions, both Jody Banim and Robin Van der Laan will have learned a lot more, moving forward.

Rangers second half: King, J.Burns, Coulson, D.Burns, Kenton, Ray-Harvey, Reid(replaced by Turner), Carr(replaced by Trialist 4), Cuff, Sleigh, Green.
