Stafford Rangers 1 – 1 Workington

Stafford Rangers 1 – 1 Workington

Evo-Stik Northern Premier League
Saturday 5 January 2019

Stafford Rangers dropped in to the bottom three in the table for the first time this season after being held to a 1-1 draw by fellow strugglers Workington. It was the first home game for the joint management team of Alex Meechan and Andy Fearn whose tenure had got off to a losing start at Mickleover Sports on New Year’s Day. There were two changes to the starting line up with keeper Adam Siviter replacing George Sykes-Kenworthy, who has returned to parent club Bradford City, while newcomer Matty Hill came in at left back with Izak Reid missing due to illness.

Rangers got off to a flyer, taking the lead in the 5th minute with a spectacular strike from Theo Bailey-Jones. Dan Burns’ goal bound header from Andy Haworth’s corner was punched away by Reds’ keeper Aaron Taylor but when Haworth delivered the ball back into the area, Bailey-Jones, with his back to goal, launched himself acrobatically to fire Rangers in front.

Workington soon got their game in to motion and looked dangerous in attack although it was Rangers who continued to create the better chances. Haworth probably should have done better when he fired wide then it needed a last-ditch tackle from Dan Wordsworth to deny Jake Charles. Soon after, Josh Green also went wide from just inside the area.

For Workington, both Sam Smith and Connor Tinnion saw their efforts go over, but their best chance of the opening 45 mins came via a poor back pass from Tom Thorley that put Tinnion clear of the Stafford defence. Siviter raced out of his area and Tinnion tried to lob him but Siviter was equal to it with a defensive header to clear the danger.

Luke Jones came close to increasing Rangers’ lead early in the second half, but Workington sub Kieran Maguire headed off the line. But the game changing moment came shortly before the hour mark. With Workington midfielder Scott Allison lying badly injured on the half way line, referee Andy Ellis called halt to play as Joe Cuff and Bradley Carroll battled for possession. As the whistle halted play, the two players clashed in what appeared little more than ‘handbags’ which prompted the assistant to call the referee’s attention and Cuff was sent off with no action against the Workington man who had already been cautioned.

It seemed a bizarre decision – even more so when video footage afterwards showed no reason why Cuff should receive any punishment whatsoever. Rangers now came under heavy pressure from the visitors and Siviter went low to his left to keep out a Tinnion free kick. The Workington no 11 was then teed up by Jason Walker but fired straight at the Rangers’ keeper.

Rangers still looked dangerous on the counter and Charles’ looked set to add to the tally only for Josh Calvert to deny him the shot. With just 10 minutes remaining on the clock, Workington finally broke through. Tinnion was again in the thick of the action as he crossed from the left. Gari Rowntree’s shot was deflected into the path of Wordsworth who nodded past Siviter from close range. Still Rangers did not give up but both Green and Lewis Banks missed chances to snatch a winner while Maguire went wide with Workington’s best opportunity.

Workington Preview

Workington preview

On Saturday we have a home fixture with Workington, and as a home game the home support has to be the 12th man. There is the likelihood of seeing goals as the two teams w have scored 58 goals and conceded 83 between them. You may even see some red cards handed out, as twice in their last 4 games Workington have had 2 players sent off. Put all that into the mix and you have what could turn out to be an explosive fixture.

We will be looking to avenge our opening day of the season defeat at Workington where we lost 1-0 to a late goal. We have to be careful however, and not to underestimate the Workington team who have just appointed a new manager and have drawn two away games 0-0 at Hyde and Nantwich. Their only league win on the road was last month at Lancaster who also lie in the lower reaches of the league table. Our new joint managers will be looking to put Mickleover behind them and open their account with a home win. On current form we have one win, one draw and 3 defeats in our last 5 while Workington have that one win and 4 defeats.

Our first ever meeting with Workington was their first ever game in the Northern Premier League having lost their place in the football League. We won 3-0 at Borough Park in August 1977. Since that date both clubs have seen ups and downs in their leagues. Our paths this century also echoes the ups and downs with gaps in the years.

The post Steve Burr era failed to get off to the perfect start as Stafford Rangers threw away a two-goal lead in their bottom of the table clash at Mickleover. After a quiet and uneventful opening, Stafford snatched control with two goals in quick succession. It was Rangers who produced the games’ first shot of note on 14 mins when Joe Cuff’s 30 yarder was well held by Callum Hawkins diving to his right.

But, two minutes later, the Mickleover keeper was beaten from around 25 yards by Theo Bailey-Jones’ well struck drive after Jake Charles had knocked down a centre from Andy Haworth. If Hawkins was blameless for Rangers’ opener, he had to take full responsibility for the second on 22 mins. Rangers countered following a Mickleover free kick. The ball came out to Joe Cuff on the left wing but his harmless looking cross was spilled into his own net at the foot of his near post.

Charles missed two great chances to add to Stafford’s lead, firstly sliding wide when off balance then hitting the post with the goal at his mercy after taking the ball around Hawkins. Mickleover’s best chance of the half came shortly before the interval but George Sykes-Kenworthy was equal to Nathan Jarman’s strike.

But it was a different story in the second half as Stafford switched off and allowed Mickleover back into the contest. It was a goalkeeping error that opened the door on 61 mins as George Sykes-Kenworthy failed to collect a long throw from Jake Scott and Shaquille McDonald hammered in from close range.

It was McDonald who levelled the scores on 77 mins when Stafford were caught napping from John McGrath’s quickly taken free kick. The immediate danger seemed to have passed as Jimmy Phillips sent his shot across the face of the Stafford goal but when the ball came back in, McDonald had time to fire in the equaliser. The Stafford collapse was complete five minutes from time when Dan Burns was penalised for hand ball and Jarman fired in the winner from the penalty spot.

Mickleover Preview

This coming Tuesday sees us venture up the A50 again on our way to the New Years Day fixture at Mickleover. We lie 17th after 23 games with 24 points, and after their vital 1-0 win over Marine on Saturday, Mickleover are 19th (one place off the relegation zone) with 22 points from their 24 games. This game certainly has the dreaded 6 pointer tag. With our own managerial change, it is important that as many fans travel to this fixture to be out 12th man, and to ensure that we can make 2019 the turning point in our season to climb the table.

Mickleover were formed in 1948 and spent 44 years in the Derby and District League, but steady ground improvement work saw then accepted into the Central Midlands League, and from 1999 into the Northern Counties East. They joined the Northern Premier League family and got promotion into step 3 football for the 2010/11 season where we met for our first ever competitive matches the following season with a 1-1 home draw and 1-0 away defeat. That season Mickleover suffered their first ever relegation and we did not meet again until our relegation into step 4 in 2014/15 when we won 3-1 at home and lost 0-2 away. That was the season Mickleover went back up and saw another season of missing other till of course we were promoted the following year. 2016/17 encounters saw us get a double in 5 days with 1-0 home win on a Tuesday night followed by a 3-1 win at Mickleover on the next Saturday. Last season we have a 1-1 home draw with a 2-0 away win. Could last season’s results be replicated as we drew this seasons August Bank Holiday Monday game at Marston Road
1-1. Only time will tell.
