Chasetown Preview – Phil Bennett

I think when the draw was first made, there where differing trains of thought. It’s the Integro Cup, the League Cup for the Northern Premier League. Although sponsored, there is very little money on offer, and then you must get at least to the to the semi-finals. As a result, many clubs see the competition as a hindrance and want to be out of it as quick as you can. However, it can be used to give fringe players and youth an opportunity to stake a claim for the first team. We know only too well that our  fringe players are playing due to our injury list, so our squad will be the fit and able plus a couple of kids from the academy.

Hold on though. This is not just any Integro Cup match. We have been pitted with Chasetown from Division 1, and a fair few of their squad plus the management team, have recent experience of wearing the black and white stripes of the Rangers. The loose term of Rangers v Rangers reserves will no doubt stir the ex-players as they attempt to do one over on their previous club. This puts a different complexion on the fixture and should make for an interesting game.

Chasetown currently lie 15th in the South Eastern Division, of which Sutton Coldfield still lie bottom. They have picked more points on the road than at home, although their away league form is won 2 and lost 2. Their 2 wins were a 4-2 win at Newcastle Town where Jack Langstone got a hat trick and a 3-0 win at Frickley with George Cater getting on the score sheet.

Tuesday night will be a strange encounter as both teams may put out weakened squads, but then again you have the local rivalry angle plus the old boy’s influence. So, if you want to see the outcome, please come on down on Tuesday to witness the event. Remember also that this will be our first home game sine 8th October ending our run of 7 away fixtures. As you may have forgotten how to get to the ground, please use sat nav of ST16 3UF.

Management – Signing News & Injury Update

A statement from our Management Team –

“We are delighted to announce the permanent signing of Brad Grayson from Buxton FC. We would like to thank their Chairman, Manager and Secretary for their assistance in facilitating this transfer. We would also like to thank the SRFC Board and our Secretary for their tireless effort in getting this deal across the line and not least the Players’ Fund for the financial support.

As we all know Brad has scored five goals in his six appearances for us on loan and we look forward to working with him and wish him a long and productive career at the Boro!

You will hear from Brad in due course.

We would also like to confirm that we have released Andy Haworth and thank him for his time and effort at the club.

In addition we are disappointed to confirm that after a Seven Day Notice of Approach, Max Dixon has opted to sign for Rushall Olympic U-21s who play Saturday mornings, making it impossible for Max to remain at SRFC. We wish him well for the future.

We welcome Will McGuffie on loan from Wigan and Shakeel Jones Griffiths. It is hoped one or two more additions may be announced over the next couple of weeks.

On the injury front Jake, Sam and Luke are all nearing a return to action, with Robbie and Josh Burns needing further assessment before this weekend’s fixture at Warrington. Jack, who broke his hand at Sutton will also be assessed before the game. Tom is now well on the road to recovery and Theo is now walking without the aid of the “Robocop boot”. Both are longer term absentees.”

Warrington match preview – Phil Bennett

Please note that although the original fixtures gave us a free Saturday, we are in fact now playing away to Warrington. Saturday is the date of the next round of the F A Trophy but with both us and Warrington out of the competition it makes sense for the League to reschedule this game that was originally postponed due to Warrington having to play a FA Cup replay. Sadly, for us it is yet another away fixture which gives us a run of 7 away games without a home fixture.

Historically, this is a relatively new fixture as the sides had never met until our promotion back to step 3 in season 2016/17. Saturday 17th December 2016 was our first ever visit to Cantaliver Park nestled right next to the Manchester Ship Canal. We cruised to a 2-0 lead and the fog started to come down and the referee abandoned the game. Justice was done when the game was replayed in April and we won 2-1. We returned to Warrington 2017/18 but lost 1-0. However, it is our last visit to Warrington last season that is the one that is best remembered.

We pulled off a shock win at leaders Warrington which eased our relegation fears. Warrington played most of the game with 10 men after a dismissal on 14 minutes. They were on an 8-match unbeaten run and despite being a man down Warrington took the lead on 21 minutes. However, as half time approached Warrington failed to clear a free kick and Luke Jones equalised.

Around the hour mark, Rangers scored two goals in three minutes, from Theo Bailey-Jones and a header from Luke Jones. Theo almost made it 4 a few minutes later. Warrington pulled a goal back with 3 minutes to go and laid siege to the Rangers goal for an equaliser, but in stoppage time Adam Siviter pulled off a stunning save to earn his side all three points. It was the travelling Rangers fans in the crowd of 553 that were celebrating at full time.

Warrington’s home form has been hit and miss this season winning 3, drawing 1 and losing 3. They however have already beaten Bamber Bridge 3-1 at home which puts extra pressure on our visit. If we can repeat our heroics from last season than who knows what can happen. You support is much needed so for those travelling by car you will need the sat nav of WA4 2RS, and for rail travellers you have a short walk from Warrington Bank Quay after a change at Crewe.
