Grimsby Borough Match Preview

This Saturday we embark on our FA Cup run for season 2018/19. Like every season we dream of TV coverage in the early rounds proper with an away tie at a top Premier League side to dramatically increase our finances. This season we have been drawn away to step 6 side, Grimsby Borough of the Toolstation Northern Counties East league division one. If you need a guide, step 6 is the level of Brocton. Therefore, in this the first ever meeting of the two clubs there is a massive incentive for them to put one over on us and giant kill a step 3 team.

Grimsby Borough currently lie 5th in their league, having played 5, winning 3 and drawing 2, and this includes a 10 – 0 thrashing of bottom club Bolsover. Grimsby Borough have already played an FA Cup tie this season beating step 5 Long Eaton 1-0 in the Preliminary Round, but last Saturday they tasted defeat for the first time this season when losing 2-1 away at step 5 Worksop in the first qualifying round of the FA Vase. Let’s hope we can ruin their Wembley chances on two consecutive Saturdays.

Grimsby Borough play at the Bradley Football Development Centre, which from Google maps, looks like a complex with a main football pitch with a capacity of 1000 (180 seats and cover for 200), an all-weather pitch and several grass pitches. Attendances for their 4 home league games averages at 110, so optimistically there could be a gate exceeding 200 on Saturday.

The clubs nickname is the Wilderness Boys, and I do not know if that represents how far out of Grimsby they are, or if relates to their recent league history. In the last 10 years of playing in the NEC League 1 they have, in the main, been a bottom half team, finishing bottom a few years ago with a goals-conceded column well over 100. Since then there has been a dramatic improvement finishing 4th and 3rd in the last 2 seasons.

So, as we embark on our 260 mile round trip we hope we can go with a professional attitude to get the job done and ensure the winners cheque from the FA of £6000 arrives on our doorstep, meaning we have escaped the potential banana skin that could await us.

Hednesford Match Preview

Hednesford Match Preview

In the summer we had the results of the FA re-organisation of Non-League football, which consigned Hednesford fixtures to cup ties and friendlies. Then Shaw Lane decide to pull out of senior football, so instead of travelling to somewhere in Yorkshire, we now make the short hop across Cannock Chase to meet our old rivals yet again. This fixture needs no introduction, as it is the ones the fans look forward to. Last season Hednesford did the double over us so they hold the bragging rights, but former Stafford Rangers and Hednesford striker Steve Burr knows only too well the feeling in this fixture as we attempt to get the bragging rights back.
We all know how the fledgling league table has yet to settle down following our win on Saturday which saw the league table before the game pitching us without a win and second from bottom playing unbeaten Stalybridge lying second. How the tables were turned, and the same could happen on Tuesday night as fourth placed Hednesford with 9 points entertain ourselves, who with a win could be just 1 point behind them. Hednesford’s 2 defeats have come at home to Scarborough and Gainsborough, both who are expected to be near the top come the end of April, so for us to take all three points may put us in that bracket. One thing is certain, and that is if a goal or few are scored then any could be a contender for goal of the season. We have witnessed great strikes so far from Louis Briscoe and Joe Cuff, and a what if from Kyle Perry’s overhead kick, but Hednesford also have a goal in that category having seen on the NPL website the film of Hednesford player Jed Davies taking aim from 35 yards and seeing the ball fly over the Farsley Celtic goalkeeper. As is usual in such local derbies quite a few players taking part will have appeared for both sides, so it will be nice to see Josh Craddock and Sam Griffiths again. There should be a good attendance for the fixture and we hope for another win, but whenever you mention a Hednesford v Rangers fixture my mind goes back a few years when a Simpkin free kick found the back of the net in the dying seconds. I hope we do not leave it too late on Tuesday. Click here to check out the facilities at Keys Park
August Player of the Month – with John Bromley

August Player of the Month – with John Bromley

Congratulations to Tom Thorley who was voted Stafford Rangers Player of the Month for August.

Tom received the Evostik Northern Premier League award sponsored by Bowlands Brewery and also the Stafford Rangers award sponsored jointly by Holdcroft Motors and ACT Fasteners. The awards were made by Chairman John Bromley and Steve Winterburn, representative of Holdcroft Motors.

Tom moved back to his home town club at the start of this season. In a previous spell at the club he became a firm fans favourite. A stylish midfielder, Tom started his career as a junior at Stoke City. He ad two loans spells at Rangers in 2009 and moved to Marston Road on a permanent basis, having been released by Stoke City. He moved on to Worcester City in 2010 to pursue his studies and remained at Worcester for 3 seasons before a move to Hednesford Town where he remained until his transfer to Boro, with the exception of a brief period at AFC Telford.

Stalybridge Preview

This weekend sees the big Old Firm Derby as Celtic take on Rangers. Sorry, but that is the big Glasgow derby, although to many the Northern Premier League old firm derby is more important as Stafford Rangers take on Stalybridge Celtic. This rivalry has been going on since the Cheshire League days, so is not as old as that one across the border. However, this encounter has some added spice as Stalybridge last season were managed by our Steve Burr. Steve has already said that he has no animosity to Stalybridge as they split on good terms, so that could take some edge away from the game.

When the fixtures came out, I think many saw us having a tough start to the campaign and would certainly have seen this fixture as potentially providing a good return for us. Looking at the fledgling League table how wrong we were as we lie second from bottom and Stalybridge lie second. Already this season we have seen some quirks in the league format having played two long distance Saturday away games and two midweek home fixtures, while Stalybridge’s four games has seen 3 home games and one away game. With a return of two wins and a draw at home and a draw away (0-0) they lie second to Gainsborough. Hopefully a few more games will see things balance out and we start to climb the table.

Last season, both games saw 2-0 home wins, so we would certainly like to see a repeat of that. Season 2017/18 was Stalybridge’s first season back in the Northern Prem following relegation from the National League North, and they struggled throughout finishing 22nd which, in a normal season, would have seen them suffer a further relegation.

While Steve will be renewing former acquaintances, a former player may be in the Celtic ranks, as Niall Flint makes a brief return to Marston Road. We picked up Niall from Matlock but things did not work out and he moved on.

Stalybridge should bring a few fans along as they have subsidised coach fares for away games so lets hope our fans can come out in force on Saturday for the 3pm kick off, and be on song to see our first win of the season.

Mickleover Game

Due to the reorganisation of the Leagues at step 3 our “usual” bank holiday fixture with Hednesford disappeared. As we know, Hednesford were reinstated into the NPL with the demise of Shaw Lane but the league decided not to re jig all the fixtures, so we entertain Mickleover on a holiday fixture. Mickleover are one of our local games, mileage wise so we hope to receive some away following as we hope to swell the gate with the usual home crowd and some extras taking advantage of the bank Holiday. Mickleover too are a relatively young football club, being formed in 1948. This will be only the 9th meeting of the clubs and we hold a slight edge over them having won 4, drawn 2 and lost 2 scoring 11 and conceding 7. Should therefore make for a tight encounter where a large bank holiday crowd can cheer on the team and add much needed gate revenue to the club.

Promising Vale Star Signs In

Promising Vale Star Signs In

Promising young attacker, Harry Benns 18, is joining The Boro on an initial one month loan deal from Port Vale. Harry has impressed enough to win a pro deal at Vale Park and comes highly recommended to Boro Boss, Steve Burr.

The deal should be finalised on Thursday when Benns meets up with the squad and will hopefully be available for selection at South Shields on Saturday.
