Boost The Boro Update October 2018

Boost The Boro Update October 2018

Since its launch in August 2016 Boost the Boro has well and truly gone nationwide with winners coming from Merseyside, Bristol, Skegness, Bournemouth, Droitwich, Scarborough, Lichfield, Stoke-on-Trent, and Stone in addition to the many lucky Stafford winners.

Since its launch £15,650 has been paid out in prizes and £12,045 in projects which include:

  • Mark Harrod dug outs
  • Social club shutter doors
  • Pitch maintenance
  • Medical supplies
  • Car park
  • Updating the telephone system
  • Purchase of a Haughton mower
  • A white line machine.

We have also started to do our accounts in-house and the lottery has helped to pay for our Sage subscription fee.  This is a very forward move for the club and is saving the club money in the long run.

Pitch maintenance is officially funded by the lottery on a regular basis. This summer, especially, proved how we need the lottery to maintain our pitch along with the volunteers that work so hard.

We have been working hard at growing the lottery by speaking to local PTFA’s, junior football clubs and other organisations about the partnership scheme. This has been something we have been pushing in the last few months.

The lottery administration has transitioned over to Sally-anne from Paul who is hard at work with the website, Marketing and Accounts. Sally deals with the whole Lottery administration piece along with Eric, who as always is our lottery champion. Eric works incredibly hard behind the scenes and on the front line regularly speaking to anyone he meets about the Lottery, he Is a treasure. Our Chairman John Bromley who always carries mandates in his pocket is always dropping them off to us in the office with new members that have signed up.

All of us in the commercial office continue to push the Lottery and September has been a real reward as it was our best month since the launch of the Lottery. We have managed to sign up the management team and players. We have received mandates from people involved with the under 18’s team and from the other junior teams, special thanks to Roy for his work with forging relationships with the Junior teams. We are grateful to all for their support. Furthermore, we have a resident’s association kindly put forward by Alan Gee, that have come on board and are eager to sign their residents up on the partnership scheme – we wish them all the luck with this.

We have taken on a few more agents, one from Crispin Court care home, she was eager to sign colleagues up after seeing one of the residents had won third prize in the August draw.

Currently we are ring fencing some money within the Lottery scheme to put towards the carpark. This will be put in along with kind donations from many involved with the club including individuals, Stripes and the social club committee. Needless to say we are very grateful for the support. With all that put together we will have enough to do half of the carpark and we are also applying for a grant from the Football Foundation which will make up for the rest of the car park. Our application for this is in progress.

We haven’t had to use the Lottery as much this year due to forming good relationships with local businesses that have offered up supplies and workers to complete work that has been needed in the ground allowing us to save up towards the car park fund.

Our future plan is to outline projects after the car park, in order of priority to enable us to plan timescales, costs and future donations towards the infrastructure of the club.

Boost the Boro now has over 300 members and gross income has exceeded £2,000 for the first time. We are pleased to say that we will be upping the prize fund at Christmas and the prize fund is in review for the new year.

We would like to take this chance to thank all who are involved with Boost the Boro from behind the scenes to our loyal supporters – we are very grateful for your support which helps us to fund much needed projects at the club.

If you would like to become an agent or know of any organisations that would benefit from our partnership scheme, please get in touch with any of the commercial team by calling 01785 602430 or you can email lottery@staffordrangersfc.co.uk.

Kind regards

Farsley Celtic Match Preview

We are at that tie in the season when games come thick and fast. No time to dwell on Saturday’s defeat as we must look forward to Tuesday night, which brings up another “old firm derby” as we entertain Farsley Celtic. Yet again we come up against a side with some recent troubled history, as in our recent past we have played two Farsley Celtics.

We first met on August 11th, 2007 in their first came in the Blue Square Conference and we lost 1-0. They inflicted the double over us on March 1st with a 2-0 win. The following season we were both relegated, but again we met on the opening day but at Marston Road on 9th August and we beat them 1-0. The return fixture we were well beaten 4-0, a game I remember well in that our own financial troubles had seen some players leave and we put out a much-weakened team. The following season in the Blue Square North we drew 2-2 at home on August 22nd, 2009, but I have no record of an away fixture. However, history tells us that Farsley went into administration in June 2009 having failed to fulfil its fixtures and were expelled. The new Farsley Celtic started up in 2010, still playing at the Throstle Nest and in the Northern Counties East Premier Division. A steady climb up the pyramid saw our paths meet again last season where we lost both Northern Premier League games, 2-0 at home and 1-0 away.

So far this season Farsley have played 9 games to our 12 and lie 10th with 16 points from 5 wins, 1 draw and 3 defeats. Oddly enough while we have played 6 away games Farsley have only played 3, with a win at Warrington and two defeats to Basford and Nantwich. Perhaps we can catch them cold on one of their rare away journeys this season

Manager Steve Burr has commented on how good our fans are, so it is important we have a good turnout to support the team as it attempts to get back on winning ways, in the knowledge that a win will take us above out opponents.

Stafford Rangers 1-3 Scarborough Athletic

Stafford Rangers 1-3 Scarborough Athletic

Evo-Stik Northern Premier League
Saturday 6 October 2018

Stafford Rangers suffered their third consecutive defeat and lost their unbeaten home record, but it was another afternoon where they could have had something from the game if a little more luck had gone their way.
Following Tuesday’s defeat at Marine Rangers fielded two new faces in the starting line up with Morgan Bacon replacing Adam Whitehouse in goal while Morgan James came in to midfield. Jack Sherratt and Sam Coulson were on the bench.

In an evenly matched game, Stafford started the better of the two sides and went close when Theo Bailey-Jones struck the post from around 15 yards out with Scarborough keeper Thomas Taylor just watching.

A couple of minutes later, Harry Benns dispossessed Bailey Gooda allowing Louis Briscoe to advance but he chose to shoot from distance and the ball went tamely wide.

Benns himself went wide when well-placed but both sides then found chances increasingly hard to come by and the half was well past the midway point before the visitors had a shot on goal and on that occasion Luke Dean saw his effort deflected wide.
Up to then, Stafford had looked the better side and it was against the run of play on 30 mins that Scarborough went ahead. A goal kick from Taylor was eventually hooked forward by Michael Coulson and Wayne Brooksby found space on the edge of the box. His shot took a slight deflection, but it was enough to send the ball past Bacon via his left-hand post.

Gooda made a goal line clearance to deny Bailey-Jones with Kyle Perry waiting to pounce but Stafford levelled on 38 mins when Briscoe’s corner was headed in by Tom Thorley. The corner came after Taylor had had to throw himself to his right to push away a Briscoe free kick.

But it was short lived parity and Scarborough were back in front on 41 mins when James Walshaw took advantage after Morgan James had failed to clear the lines. The two sides traded chances early in the second half, but it was Scarborough who were to add to their score on 54 mins when Kevin Burgess headed in at the back post from a Coulson corner.

Bailey-Jones went close to reducing the arrears after being let in by an error from Gooda, but he struck the Scarborough post for the second time in the afternoon while, at the other end, Coulson saw his shot tipped onto the bar by Bacon then Banks denied Walshaw with a timely tackle. Rangers kept working but a lack of creativity and firepower meant there was no way back. The nearest they came to scoring was when Briscoe forced a save from Taylor in added time.

Scarborough Match Preview – Phil Bennett

We had the same dilemma with Kings Lynn. Have we played them before or not? Kings Lynn were of the opinion that the old Kings Lynn and the new Kings Lynn Town were the same team. However, the two Scarborough’s appear to be two different football clubs, as the new Athletic take none of the old clubs’ history with them. This therefore means our old Northern Premier league rivals have no association with the new club, so we meet on the playing field for the first time.

Scarborough Athletic Football Club was formed on 25th June 2007 following the liquidation of Scarborough FC. The new club was set up by the Seadog Trust, a group of supporters who originally started the trust with the aim of gaining fan representation on the board of Scarborough FC. However, as a result of the old club’s liquidation, the Seadog Trust moved quickly to ensure a football team continued to represent the town at the highest level possible. On 25th June 2007, Scarborough Athletic were accepted into the NCEL Division 1 for the 2007/08 season, and an agreement was reached for the club to use Bridlington’s Queensgate stadium as part of a ground share with no suitable stadium able to be used in Scarborough.

Scarborough Athletic FC Society Ltd is a registered society under the Co-operative and Community Benefits Societies Act 2014 as an Industrial & Provident Society. The Scarborough Athletic FC Supporters Society Ltd is solely a Supporters Trust owned club. Company No. 30123R. If you think you have seen these facts before it is because Stripes are set up under the same rules, but the difference being that Stripes do not run Stafford Rangers.

Promoted to The Northern Premier League last season, Scarborough are enjoying a good first season at step 3, lying 3rd with 21 points from their 11 games, which includes 3 away wins at Hednesford, Hyde and North Ferriby. They also attract good crowds at their new stadium back in Scarborough and are expected to bring a good following this Saturday.

However, you cannot preview this match without mentioning the old rivalry between ourselves and the old Scarborough. They were formed in 1879, 3 years after us, but they beat us to the Northern premier league as they were one of the founding clubs in 1968. The 1970s was a successful time for the club winning the FA Trophy three times including the dramatic 1976 final when equalising twice they scored the winner in the 120th minute from the penalty spot to beat us 3-2. A fact repeated many times in that in that game over 120 minutes Scarborough were only ahead for the final few seconds. Over the years we have enjoyed some happy (and unhappy) timers at Seamer Road so it was an unhappy time when debts forced the old cub to cease business.

There are many ties to link the two clubs together, not just our league and trophy encounters but the fact that in 1976 we both represented the Northern Premier League in the Anglo Italian Cup and we both beat the current Serie A side Udinese. The two club’s hotels were close, so friendships developed, and it was sad news that on 18 May 1977, 21-year-old Tony Aveyard died after collapsing because of a head injury suffered in a match two days earlier.

Let’s hope for a good turnout to see if Rangers can put their away form behind them and preserve our unbeaten home record.

2007 Forest Green away, Conference 1-3
