A message from Eric Robins

Last Friday one of our life long fans Eric Robins held his birthday party in the club, Eric used his own birthday party as a fundraising event which was a great sucess. Eric has always been a valued part of our club and his relentless fundraising efforts are really appriciated from the directors and staff of Stafford Rangers Football Club. We thank you Eric for your support and generosity you really are one in a million and the world could use more Eric Robins – Every non league football club could use an Eric!

Below is a message direct from Eric:

I held my combined birthday / fund raising party on Friday 24th January in the Jon Downing Suite. 120 invites went out and although I was slightly disappointed that 38 were unable to attend for various reasons, I was delighted with the support I received from the 82 guests. Their generosity was greatly appreciated which enabled me to raise £630 for the players fund. The raffle raised £250 and thanks to Kerry Wingate and Ursula Parker for their support in selling the tickets. Personal donations raised a fantastic £390.00.
I had a thoroughly enjoyable evening which was quite emotional when Sally surprised me with a cake and a message from my friends at the 60’s bar in Los Gigantes, Tenerife.

The feedback I received from my guests was that they all enjoyed themselves and thought the band I booked on the night; The Dodgy jammers were great!
To all those friends who attended many thanks for your support which enabled me to beat my target by £150.00.

Weekend Update – One in, One Out

Ahead of the weekend game, away to Witton Albion, we can confirm that Brandon Diau, 26, has joined the club on an initial one month loan from Kidderminster Harriers. A 6ft 6″ centre forward, Brandon us gives another dimension that we have been missing.

We can also confirm Robert Thompson Brown was subject of a 7 day approach from Stratford Town and he leaves the club with our thanks and best wishes.

Next Saturday we make the short hop across to Cheshire to Wincham Park on the outskirts of Northwich. Their previous ground was the Central Ground, and as its name suggests was in Northwich town centre. The sale of the ground to Sainsbury’s allowed the club to move to a much more modern stadium, over a mile away in nearby Wincham. Rangers have fond memories of both grounds as in season 1984/85 we were presented with the NPL championship trophy after a 1-0 win thanks to Martin Hanchard’s penalty. The league had been won the previous Tuesday at Goole. Upon moving to the new ground Rangers were the first visitors for a pre-season game and our Terry Knight has the distinction of scoring the first goal on the new ground.

The first records of a Witton Albion F.C. are in 1887, and they were formed by a group of Northwich Victoria players, officials and supporters who chose to break away from the Vics in protest of the clubs’ decision to become a ‘professional’ side. Witton is a parish within the town of Northwich which may explain the club’s name. In 1910 they moved to a ground in Witton Street. Witton, now the senior side in Northwich, historically count Northwich Victoria has their rivals which has now extended to 1874 Northwich, a club ran by disgruntled Northwich Victoria fans.

In recent years this fixture has been eventful. 2017/18 saw us win 2-1 with Adam Whitehouse being sent off late in the game and our sub goalie came off the bench to save the penalty. Last season a last gasp Bignott strike saw us get a draw.

While we still lie bottom, despite our win over Scarborough, Witton Albion are 7th with a home record of won 8, drawn 1 and lost 5, which makes our task even harder. A task made harder as on Saturday Witton came away from leaders South Shields with 3 points having scored two goals in time added on. Remember our last visit to Cheshire, at Nantwich. We need to take heed of dramatic finishes. While we have a free midweek Witton travel to Basford Monday night. Basford are second so Witton will be on cloud nine for another scalp. However, Witton’s current form shows 2 wins, 1 draw and 3 defeats, but we know that we are now unbeaten in 4 games.

We will clutch at all available straws so I hope fans can make the journey on Saturday to help cheer the team on.

Scarborough Athletic Preview – Phil Bennett

Last season Scarborough won 3-1 here at Marston Road in their first ever visit to Marston Road. However, if you go back in history under the “old” Scarborough name before their current re incarnation, then you find that Rangers v Scarborough was a regular fixture in both Northern Premier League and Conference before Neil Warnock took them into the football league.

If you look back at our Northern Premier League meetings at home between 1969/70 and 1978/79 we met 10 times, winning 8, drawing 1 and losing 1 with aggregate scores of 18 for and 7 against. Our Alliance Premier League (under its various sponsorships) home games between 1979/80 to 1982/83 and 1985/86 to 1986/87 did not fare as well but in 6 games we won 2, drew 3 and lost 1 with aggregate scores of 6-6. Therefore, historically we hold the upper hand over the “old” Scarborough, so nee to start putting that record to the test with the new club and hope to attain our first victory over them at the 4th attempt.

From last Saturday’s draw with Warrington, which felt like a defeat we need to keep that momentum going and pick up the much needed 3 points. Thanks to our two recent Staffs Senior and Walsall Senior Cup wins, albeit against step 5 and 6 sides, it prompted some wag on Tuesday night to say we are unbeaten in 3. We therefore need to make that unbeaten in 4. Scarborough obviously come looking to end that run.

Scarborough currently lie 10th with 35 points from their 27 games. Away from home Scarborough have won 4 and lost 9, with no draws. You cannot gauge how they are on their travels with wins and defeats against our relegation colleagues. However, they have a habit of losing heavily away from home with Stalybridge and Buxton putting 5 past them.

Could make for an interesting and entertaining game so please get on down to Marston Road to cheer the lads on.
