FA South Asian Heritage Campaign

FA South Asian Heritage Campaign

Football is family, where everyone is welcome

SRFC has chosen to get behind the FA’s campaign as a symbol of unity.

The FA have a focus for August on South Asian Heritage – our newly appointed EDI Officer, Megan Ratcliffe, joined a webinar hosted by Anwar Uddin MBE to listen to some key figures discussing their own experiences that highlight where they have faced difficulties as a result of their heritage, so that focus areas can be addressed and growth can come from change. Megan reflects on the webinar:

“From grassroots, to Premier League, there is growing representation from players on South Asian Heritage but this has only come from those before them paving the way – I listened to the brief history of Jack Cother for Watford FC in 1898, as the first known Asian football player, who was also quite the fan favourite – his family still attend games today. I also heard from Shin Aujla, Director of the Shrewsbury Town Foundation, as well as Sabah Mahmood, from Leighton Orient Women’s Football and Paul Kirton, a youth girls coach in the Northeast. The left-back for EFL League Two club Shrewsbury Town, Malvind Singh ‘Mal’ Benning, discussed his own experience as a Sikh male in football, known for being the first South Asian player to score at Wembley, in the bitter-sweet play-off final against his old club Mansfield Town, when he played for Port Vale. What was clear from the inspirational stories shared was the importance of inclusivity in sport.”

Did you know that 6.9% of the UK population is of South Asian heritage? Of that, almost 5 million people, 6.5% of people play FA-sanctioned football, which is around 325,000 people – that is double the population of Stafford!

For our Tuesday 19th August home fixture v Congleton Town, KO 7.45pm, Megan will be hosting an event in line with the Hindu celebration of Rakhsha Bandhan, reflecting bonds of allyship and respect. We would love for our fans to get behind this campaign with us!

We will be hosting a hospitality event in the Chairman’s suite, with a “taste of culture” matchday menu for fans with a meal of curry, chips and mini naan with sides of samosas and onion bhajis, served with traditional tea and biscuits afterwards. The cost is £10 per person, and you can book a ticket by calling Roy Sales on 07921 943112

Megan has also organised a half-time performance by a traditional, classical dance group from Stafford, in addition to activities for fans to get involved in, such as a “tie of unity”, which represents support for protected inclusivity, not only between families, but for friends and fans alike.

Squad Update

3 In for the big Kick-Off

It’s been a very busy week at the club with Neil Kitching acting to strengthen the squad ahead of the league campaign commencing this weekend.

We can confirm that 32-year-old midfielder Jack Sherratt will return to the club, having most recently turned out for Newcastle Town FC. Former fans favorite Jack brings a wealth of experience at Steps 2, 3 and 4 and we are delighted to welcome him back to the club.

We can also announce the signing of 24-year-old midfielder Jack Birch. Jack spent twelve years with Aston Villa before moving to the USA to spend three seasons with Greensboro Spartans. Returning to the UK Jack spent the end of last season at Halesowen Town FC but has joined the BORO ahead of the campaign. Welcome to the club Jack.

Also signing is 20-year-old right sided defender/midfielder Callum Wilson. Telford born Callum counts Shrewsbury and Sunderland as former clubs, and last season represented Rushall Olympic FC and Sutton Coldfield Town FC on dual registration.

Neil is excited by all three signings and will surely have a headache finalising the squad for Saturday.

We can also confirm that two of our youngsters, Max Barlow and Jack Schollar are heading to Dudley Town FC on dual registration to gain valuable match experience. We wish them both well and will be monitoring their progress.

Finally, we can confirm that the club has been successful in appealing the red card shown to Alex Worley last weekend meaning that Alex is available for selection against Avro FC this weekend.

Welcome back to the Boro, Shezza, and welcome Jack and Callum.

Playing Surface Issues

Stafford Rangers - PitchWe wanted to provide an update on the pitch at the football club to provide some clarity and transparency.

We were like many fans on Saturday disappointed with the quality of the playing surface.

The extended periods of drought conditions have done nothing to help us or others in preparing the pitch for the start of the season and it is currently 3 or 4 weeks behind where it should be or where we want it to be.

During the close season we have invested heavily in the playing surface and maintenance provided by our ground maintenance contractor together with considerable work and effort by our own team of volunteers daily.

In May there was an intense planned programme of pitch maintenance and renovation work conducted through re-seeding, dressing, liquid feeding, fertilizing, Verti draining and sports sanding. All were carried out with the determination to provide a great playing surface that would put us in a good place for the season to come. We had also decided to reduce the amount of games/training held on the pitch compared to last season.

Prior to this Saturday’s first home game against Avro, we continue to roll, cut and water intensely with a huge amount of effort and determination and hope we can see a real improvement.

Main-stand Toilets and Turnstiles Update

Turnstiles UpgradeA few weeks ago, we shared the exciting news that Stafford Rangers FC had successfully secured a substantial grant to improve our home turnstiles and renovate the Mainstand toilets. Today, we are thrilled to provide an update on the progress being made.

Turnstile Improvements:

Work on building new turnstiles is now underway and nearing completion. This marks an important step in improving the match-day experience for our fans and visitors, ensuring smoother entry to the ground.

Mainstand Toilets Renovation:

On the Mainstand toilets front, additional funding of approximately £30,000 is needed before work can begin. This funding will come from a combination of sources, including contributions from the Club, the Boost the Boro Lottery, and, most importantly, the incredible efforts of our loyal fans supporting various fundraisers.

Fantastic Fundraising Progress:

We are thrilled to announce that, in less than three weeks, our amazing fans have already raised over £12,000 towards our target! This is an incredible achievement and demonstrates the dedication and generosity of our supporters.

Your efforts have brought us significantly closer to our goal, and we are optimistic that work on the Main-stand toilets will be completed at the of the season. However, there’s still work to do, and we need your continued support to reach the £30,000 target.

If you haven’t already done so, please consider joining the Boost the Boro Lottery or contributing to the fundraisers that are being organised by Shaun Reynolds and Scott Holmes. Every contribution, no matter how big or small, takes us one step closer to reaching our goal.

Together, we can make this vision a reality! Thank you for your continued support of Stafford Rangers FC. Let’s keep the momentum going and finish what we’ve started!

Help Needed

Help Needed

Our Turf Needs some Help

With a great deal of hard work and investment on the pitch in the close season we are starting to see the basis of an excellent playing surface despite the harsh hot weather conditions that we have had to deal with.

One of the challenges as the competition gets into its stride in August is we want to keep it that way and make sure our pitch is constantly cared for, and we do everything we can to maintain a surface that gives the ability to play great football. Whilst a full ongoing care and maintenance package has been agreed there are lots of other things we can do.

Our Head Groundsman Dennis Ecclestone is asking for four volunteers to replace divots at both half time and full time from the beginning of the season to make sure we do all we can to keep it in tip top condition. Replacing divots helps keep the surface level and maintain an even ball roll and prevents weed grasses and weeds establishing themselves.

If you have the desire to help, please text your name and details to Den first please on 07743 526804 and he will contact you.

You will make a difference, and we will in return have a free pint waiting for you in the club after the game.

So, what are you waiting for put your best foot forward and give send Dennis a message.
