Stafford Rangers 0 – 1 Chasetown

Stafford Rangers 0 – 1 Chasetown

Rangers went into this game with their local neighbours, high on confidence after winning four out of five of their pre-season games, but did not get things all their own way. With Tom Thorley, Adam Whitehoue and Jack Sherratt missing through Holidays and injury, others again had a chance to stake their claims for a place in the team.

Chasetown were first to push forward and forced the first of many corners after six minutes. On Rangers’ first foray, Malakai had a shot blocked but that turned out to be one of a number of efforts by ‘Boro. Abadaki, then chased down a defender to win the ball back but his shot flew narrowly wide. Scholars had their share of possession but without serious efforts, they forced six corners in the first twenty minutes, or so.

Abadaki was again in the action as he attacked down the left and when he pulled back for Perry, his effort was deflected wide. Boro fans then knew they could be in danger as Chasetown won a free kick outside the box. and when former Boro Man Jack Langston lined up a shot, he stepped up and his effort whistled just over the crossbar. Perry was again blocked after good approach work from Curtis, before Briscoe put in Banks, for what was one of four first half efforts for the youngster – three just off target and another forcing an excellent save from Pond, in the home goal.

Rangers continued to see a lot of the ball, while Chasetown were limited to a couple of tame shots from Wynter and Thomas, as well as a through ball that found the side netting courtesy of defenders, Boro trialist keeper and attacker, Nduna.

Half time saw a number of changes with Rangers bringing on 6 players. While Boro showed first with Bailey-Jones having a good shot saved by Pond, Chasetown took advantage of things being reorganised as Nduna nipped in on a short back pass, eluding the incoming defenders and squaring the ball back for Whieldon to give the home side a one-nil lead.  For the remainder, the balance was similar to the first half, but punctuated with changes and water breaks, in the Summer heat. Boro chances were of a better quality but the finishing touch lacked, Cuff fired wide after some neat play, Captain Jones headed wide from a corner, Bailey-Jones hit the bar from a narrow angle, before Cuff had another powerful effort across goal saved by Pond. In response, Chasetown forced an excellent save from Rangers’ trialist keeper, as well as forcing corners from another couple of goalmouth scraps where Boro safely cleared their lines.

Lessons learned in defeat but no disgrace in losing to a team largely still together after their lay-off push last season and sure to be competitive again, while the new Boro squad has two more weeks to gel.

PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY

Well taken goals from Perry and Jones gave the boys a deserved victory in another entertaining pre-season fixture against Birmingham City.

Steve Burr’s new squad, including confirmed new signings Lewis Banks and Louis Briscoe, put in another fine performance as they over powered a young Birmingham City outfit, at Marston Road.

It took a few minutes for play to settle and Blues won the first corner of the game, that came to nothing, before Boro opened their account. A well worked move saw the ball moved out to the left and an excellent low cross was delivered by Alex Curtis and Kyle Perry hammered the ball past Siviter, with no hesitation.

Izak Reid then went close as Perry turned provider but his volley went wide of the upright. The pattern continued as Boro worked the ball forward and Sherratt turned and struck a sweet effort that Siviter pushed out from just under his bar.

It took Blues twenty two minutes to conjure their first effort as McCoy worked down the right but when he cut in and shot, Adam Whitehouse blocked the effort. Soon after, Baker took aim for their second effort but this went over the bar from 20 yards. Boro re-asserted themselves with a lot more pressure and Briscoe tried his luck with another long range effort.

Boro enjoyed the share of possession for the rest of the half and seemed stronger than their young opponents, the only misfortune being the precautionary withdrawal of Sherrat, as he was replaced by yet another promising young trialist.

The second half started brightly as the same trialist fired across goal on an early run. Briscoe again tried one of his speciality long range efforts but shook the woodwork from all of 30 yards. On 66 minutes the same trialist again attacked down the left and his perfect cross was met by Luke Jones and he planted a perfect header across the goal to give Boro a more than deserved 2-0 lead.

Boro were allowing Blues only intermittent spells of pressure but kept the game under control and the best they had to offer was three off target efforts from the sprightly Thompson-Sommers. Boro ended the game on top, as another trialist effort was fired in from long range and Siviter again tipped the effort away from under the bar.

A fourth victory in five games will please Steve Burr and his staff, as the squad already shows signs of consistency, not only in results but also pattern of play.

PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY

Rangers continued their pre-season build up with another win, but this was a tougher test than the previous two games.

Kidsgrove were, however, the first to threaten as they broke into the Rangers box and Williams was denied by Matt Yates, who was standing in for the injured Adam Whitehouse.

Rangers started to assert themselves on the game and when Abadaki was brought down, some 25 yards out, Briscoe stepped up to curl a glorious free kick into the top corner and give the visitors the lead. More pressure followed and the Rangers looked threatening before they won another free kick and Briscoe’s excellent back post delivery was met by Luke Jones, who planted a header across goal and into the far corner for a 2-0 lead.

They continued to press but Kidsgrove looked dangerous on the break and Jordan Cole curled an effort wide on one of those breaks. Rangers were the stronger of the teams and threatened at regular intervals as notable, Abadaki was denied on another foray.

Lingard and the early Kidsgrove sub’ both went close before Rangers grew stronger and finished the first half, stronger of the teams.
For the first time during pre season, Steve Burr continued into the second half with the same eleven that ended the first half. They started brightly and Briscoe fired a long range effort just over, before a combination ended in Bailey-Jones failing to get on the end of a great move as they continued to press.

On 57 minutes Kidsgrove had another break and as they worked it down the left, it was cut back for the lively Lingard to apply a tidy finish and reduce the deficit. Boro were not to be outdone, so continued to thwart ‘Grove as well as look threatening as numerous changes were rung by Manager Burr.

The side looked more youthful as the game wore on and young Lucas Burnett looked a pain in the side of the hosts’ defence. After one chance had gone close, the youngster was fed the ball on the corner of the box and as he wriggled inside, fed a well taken shot into the far corner for his first senior goal. The pace of the young Boro outfit now caused a few problems as they sprang the offside trap a few times and ended the game, looking quite promising.

That was reflected in Manager Steve Burr’s post match thoughts as he declared – ” It was a very tough game, today, which I expected. Could have scored more goals in the second half but, all in all, a very good work out, I thought we stood up to the physical challenge very well. Delighted with how we passed the ball around on a dry surface, also. We now face Port Vale, at home, on Tuesday which will be another good test for our boys.”

STAFFORD RANGERS ARE THE NEXT CLUB TO JOIN THE NPLFA

Stafford Rangers FC are delighted to announce that they have joined the NPLFA – the Northern Premier League Football Academy. The premier division outfit have been wanting to engage in an education / football programme and have been looking at different options but have firmly decided to go with the leagues academy programme.

“Chairman John Bromley said “We were looking to join a football education programme and decided the NPLFA its structure and governance is the one we felt comfortable with. From a club’s point of view, it costs nothing both financially and in human resources to see if we can establish such a programme at our football club. If we can the continued on-going management of the whole programme was also a deciding factor for us. It is also the league’s academy and we feel we are supporting their initiative and forward-thinking project. We have seen the NPLFA programme’s growth and learned a lot from their presentation to us and the commitment provided therefore we are delighted to have been chosen as one of the new clubs for the 2019/20 season. The chairman added, “I would echo the thoughts of a number of club officials in press releases and I would imagine most clubs at our level with the volunteers and finances we have, would find it difficult to create such a programme, therefore to have the NPLFA oversee, monitor, manage and report to us is the best way forward.”

Newly appointed manager Steve Burr stated, “It is something I encouraged to be set up at the club as I have seen from a football aspect several players at other clubs develop and progress to the first team and I want those young lads in Stafford to know if they join the programme, develop over the two years and show the ability required they will be given a chance at this football club. I know this programme provides young lads with an opportunity to gain educational qualifications, along with a well organised football programme and if it was available when I left school it would be the place I would have gone to. There are a few organisations delivering this type of programme, however when you look at the quality, the concept and the growth of the NPLFA in such a short space of time, it shows it is being developed correctly.”

The Stafford Rangers FC Academy is a full-time course which is an alternative to college where students will study for a BTEC in Sport Level 3 (Diploma and Extended Diploma available which is the equivalent to two/three A Levels) or an NVQ Level 2 in Sport for those students who don’t manage to get their GCSE grades which will be delivered by a tutor in the mornings before a UEFA qualified football coach will train the students in the afternoons as well as manage the side on Wednesday afternoons against fellow NPLFA sides such as Leek Town, Belper Town, Micklover Sports and Witton Albion. All games will take place at the main grounds of all the Evo-Stik League clubs involved and filmed for analysis with the weekly highlights show that is published every Friday (www.youtube.com/NPLFA)

The NPL Football Academy has been a huge success on and off the pitch with over 600 students enrolling and many of those progressing onto university, scholarships in the US, the NPLFA’s own sports degree course or employment and as of May 2018 over forty-seven have progressed to their respective first teams with four students progressing to the professional game (www.nplfa.co.uk/graduates)

An NPLFA spokesperson said, “We are thrilled Stafford Rangers have joined and we close to completing our intake of clubs for the 2019-2020 season. I am sure many people are aware of the potential at Stafford as a football club and we feel with the size of the catchment area and reputation of the club we can provide and develop a successful programme. It always helps when the manager is also committed to seeing a programme develop and in Steve Burr they have a manager not afraid to develop youth which should encourage local youngsters to join the programme.”

By being a part of Stafford Rangers FC there are genuine pathways to play for the first team and with the football programme being held between Monday and Friday, students will still be able to play for their local junior sides at the weekend.

Recruitment will begin in September 2018 for a September 2019 start but interested Year 10/11 students can pre-register at nplfa.co.uk/register or you can email info@nplfa.co.uk

There is a maximum of twenty places available for the Stafford Rangers Academy with trials to be arranged in October 2018, December 2018, February 2019, April 2019 and May 2019.

Stafford Town 2 – 5 Stafford Rangers

Stafford Town 2 – 5 Stafford Rangers

Pre-season friendly
Tuesday 17 July

Rangers followed up their 7-0 win at Heath Hayes with another goal scoring bonanza as Stafford Town were beaten 5-2 at Evans Park.

As with the opening friendly on Saturday, Steve Burr took the opportunity to look at a number of trialists but it was a strong XI that kicked off and they soon made the difference in quality tell.
The opening goal came from Osebi Abadaki in the 5th minute. The tricky winger produced some good work on the left then cut in before firing past Josh Moreton in the Town goal.

On 12 mins Rangers were 2-0 up. A good low centre from A Trialist picked out Jack Sherratt and he steered the ball past Moreton.

Three minutes later it was 3-0. A clever back heal from Kyle Perry found Josh Green. He squared for Theo Bailey-Jones who teased the home keeper before lifting the ball into the back of the net.

Bailey-Jones added a fourth on 19 minutes. This time Abadaki was the provider although it looked like he was going for goal himself with another low drive but Bailey Jones was there to help it on its way.

At this stage a double figure score was on the cards but to their credit Town didn’t give up battling.
Perry, James Askey, Green and Abadaki all had shots or headers at goal but found Moreton in fine form – the Town keeper excelling with a good double save a few minutes before the interval.

By then the home side had given the scoreline an element of credibility with Kulisewa – aka Okomo – taking advantage of two defensive errors to help himself to a couple of goals. His first came on the half hour when Adam Whitehouse fumbled a corner and the youngster nipped in to head home.

Town’s second came on 38 mins. This time Askey got caught out by the extra bounce of the artificial pitch – the ball was played across the area and Kulisewa slotted in his second. Rangers made nine changes at the interval with only keeper Whitehouse and newcomer Josh Green remaining on the field.

There were a few more familiar faces on show with the likes of Louis Briscoe and Levi Reid seeing some action while Alex Curtis came on for Green 10 minutes into the second half. It was Green who had scored Rangers’ fifth of the night just 23 seconds after the resumption when he steered home from around 15 yards after good work on the left from two of the young trialists.

Green’s goal was to end to scoring for the night but it wasn’t for the want of trying on Rangers’ part as Briscoe, Reid and Curtis all tried their luck only to find Moreton in their way.

The Town keeper was beaten shortly before the end but Curtis’ shot came back off the bar.
